Back to Wile E. & Co.

Here is a quad gang set catch made at an old location I revisited.

It is thicker brush & more centrally located on the ranch.

Have you ALL played around with making subtle flat sets and using coyote fur (anal) only as the only attractor?
Had a late season coyote that had seen all of my tricks...dirt holes, double dirt holes, remakes, all sorts of flat sets using different things for backings.
I had trapped on this particular ground from the month of October through February(nuisance work into fur season). And I whacked a pile of fur there.
We had a warm up and I see fresh scat a faint tracks in the soybean field. The coyote made a wide sweep around where I had made my most of the sets.
I didn't have any clean traps with me that day so I made plans to return the next day and make a few new sets in different locations. I had a coyote that I
had skinned for sale. A buddy wanted one of the best colored coyotes I caught, so after going through bunch of OTHER bad looking coyotes I finally caught
a decent furred one and case skinned it out. He was planning on having it tanned. I cut some of the fur near the anus and put it in a plastic medicine bottle.
The next day, I made a flat set about a foot away from some soy bean duff and drove a stake down in the middle of the bean duff and placed a pinch of the
fur on the hole and left. Three days alter I had a female coyote jumping. I remade the set but it sat empty until the season ran out. Always experimenting.

I know Doug from GA said that was a set that picked up a lot of old females for him during late breeding season

Tom Miranda wrote about doing that in one of his books. He would just grab his pliers and pull some of that hair right out from a freshly caught animal on sight and then put in a new set with that anal hair.

I gave that a try a few times on flats that were right on top of the sign. It worked pretty well MC.
I called it the “Hair of the Dog” Set after that old Nazareth tune! cool

Now that I think about it, when pressure is high and the dung beetles get rolling that might be just the ticket on flat sets!
I bet just a tiny bit of urine or gland would go well with that presentation too.
But then again, maybe less is more.

Good Suggestion MC!

I read a tip on hard to catch coyotes that were heavily pressured by another trapper but have never tried it. It suggested finding where the coyotes were traveling and make a trail set. Then use a lure not right at the trap but straight across from it.
