Has anyone mixed the two products together for outdoor wood protection. I want to install some oil base product on that line shack I built last fall. In the reding I have done they say this mixture is one of the cheapest and most effective way for your buck.

Any suggestions, views or experience of what I should use with dollars in mind.

It works and works well, If you want, you can use turpentine too, a little better overall but more expensive. After the initial thinned down linseed oil mix, you can go straight...Boiled LSO will dry better.

I've used it on wood knife handles after stripping the old finish off and it works great. I use many light coats and hand buff with a lint free cloth in between coats

Never used it on something like a cabin, I'm assuming on the outside for weather protection? Not sure how it would do for that or applying to rough cut. I've used it one gun stocks and it works well, but that is with multiple light coats and rubbing each coat in, not something you would want to walls.

I had a friend that mixed linseed oil and diesel fuel and sprayed the finish on his wooden barn siding. He was satisfied with the result. Don;t have any details of mixture. old 243

Interesting! I can see the benefit of the product soaking into the wood deeper. That is the logic for adding mineral spirt to linseed oil for a deep soaking for better and longer protection. Thanks

Gotta say it -
To the OP , be careful with disposal of linseed oil rags. They are the worst offender for catching fire after throwing them out. The can catch fire all on their own , hours even days or weeks later. This is the main reason places will have flame proof metal self closing trash cans for oily rags only.

Let the rags 'air out' outdoors before putting them in the trash.

Painted my aunts barn with used motor oil when about 13. Looked great nice and black last a long time. boards on trailer get the same treatment.

Thinning it to dilute the cost will also dilute the effectiveness

True! Mineral spirt has wood protective agents in it also, but a deep penetration is a plus. MS is a petroleum product.

Diesel Oil will eat up the wood and make it rot quicker.

Check out Bob Bennies youtube video on how he treats his bee boxes. He uses linseed oil, mineral sprits and copper on them they last a long time for him.
