Sarcoptic mange mites can infect humans but I don't think it happens very often. Also, mites are host specific, so even though mange mites from foxes and coyotes can affect humans, the infection is self-limiting because the mites will not reproduce if not on their host specie.

I've skinned a lot of red fox with mange on the tail like that coyote in the picture. That's where it almost always starts on the fox around here, on the tail. If it hasn't spread to the back legs I put them up. I'm not throwing away an otherwise good fur because of a mangy tail.

I've never been infected.

I have!!

You guys are more brave than I am.
I carry those mangy ones over to the nearby drainage ditch or brush pile and go back and remake the set. I won’t mess with the scroungy mangy ones.
Dead coyotes seem to attract more coyotes and I’ll take the next one to visit the set that’s in better shape thank you.

I had a buddy I trapped with years ago up I, Kansas that processed the skulls and claws of about any critter we caught. He would gladly take even the nastiest of mangy coyotes for that purpose.

I remember him catchin mange and he just rubbed some motor oil on it like it was no big deal. I think he got a ringworm another and did the same thing.

Well I finally got a stretcher for it and put the fur up. Only 8 small holes smile . I'm getting used to my caribou double sided knife. Practice yote (my first yote)!

Yeah, I assumed with no tail, this thing wouldn't even sell. I assumed it would have graded damaged. Those haven't been selling, have they?

To practice on a frozen coyote is cutting every inch off, there is not pulling and striping the pelt off. You can thaw it out for a day or so and they pull off a lot better, but if you want to skin a coyote warm is best. They still stink though. And welcome to T-Man, shorting your name to WCO......jk

JK has an important tip there for anyone pursuing coyotes that one intends to skin. Fresh coyotes peel easy. Frozen ones are difficult. Also, and I have no clue why they tho green so fast, but take care of harvested coyotes timely. Bellys can go green in a matter of hours after they are down depending on temps and other conditions. Riding around in back of a pickup with sun hitting them does them no favors. Get on them as quickly as you can when you get home. Don’t get behind on skinning and waiting a day or two should only be a last resort.
My opinion, my experience. Take pride in the skinning and finishing. Take your time.
Glad to see you practicing. Learn as you go. You would rather learn on no value or low value coyotes than when they were $50 or more for good ones.
Good luck sir and congrats.
