I use shredded cardboard, paper and dirt… I get a good even mix and then spray a little water until damp… you don’t want it getting too wet because you can drown them but you don’t want it too dry either. Put a lid on it but not too tight because they need air,, you need to keep them dark and cool. They get hot pretty easily. Throw veggie and fruit peels in there. They are actually pretty easy to keep. With all the rain we’ve gotten here , I’ve been going out with my granddaughter and getting several dozen to start up my yearly worm farm… I don’t keep them over the winter because I don’t fish during the winter.

I did , but when they kids put the lid on tight they could no longer stay in the basement and went to the garage where they froze
if they are trying to escape , in my case not enough air in because the kids fed them then snapped the lid down , I had just been setting it on a little off
I started with what they say was a pound , it was a ice cream container of compost and worms , when they were trying to escape it was handfuls of worms to scoop up probably the original containers worth but with no soil and x2 that was a bout a year in.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

If you a talking about red wigglers, they grow like crazy in our compost pile. It is in the shade about 2-3 foot high. They also did well in the pig poop piles that I wind rowed when we raised them for 4 H

Hang a light bulb over the bed, they don't like the light and will stay under the surface, otherwise they will climb out and stampede away. Doesn't matter how tight the lid is, they have no bones, and can ooze out of any sized crack.

I just use dirt, in a small plastic bin. I feed 'em avocados, banana peels, and coffee grounds. They had babies so I guess they're doing pretty good.
