Just like the question says. When I was growing up, I only ever had one pole, used for everything from bluegills to catfish. It was some Walmart special, strung with 12 lb line, and I thought I was perfect for all my needs. Now that I've grown and matured, I've got two poles.....a light one for bluegill, and a heavy one for catfish I know a guy that grew up using a cane pole for everything, and he seems to think it was suitable for a very fish out there. My kids have one pole each, too.
I know some guys have dozens of rod/reel combos, specialized for every situation out there. Is that really necessary? Does anyone just have one or two poles that they use for everything anymore? Several is nice and almost necessary if one can afford it.

More than a dozen. But not because I put a lot of value on having the right pole. As the kids grew up they moved from a little kids pole to a a big kids pole to a grown up pole we added a few to the collection.. We did a few youth fishing days at the church and I picked up a few extra walmart specials for the kids to use. Tried surf fishing with my kids a few times so everybody got a big pole - We live too far from the beach for that to have lasted long. I do have two niceish poles that I actually use. Niceish but not really nice. Once that's all over you have 15 poles hanging from the shop ceiling.

I have about four dozen. Heavy, medium, light, ultralight, spinning, baitcasting, fly, you name it I probably have it. Jim

I don't know exactly I bought a new Med fast 7 foot with an Okuma reel this year ,both okuma but purchased separately because I liked the way both felt
I have a Fenwick with a Diawa reel my son and I bought identical setups in 2021 before we took a 2 week trip fishing around the state.
I have the Abu combo my dad bought the same rod and real in 1997 for himself , my brother and I when we went to Canada so that we had the same rig so what was working on one should work on the other. nice idea and obviosly a combo i have kept around a long time
I have my abu bait caster I had to have when I was about 13-14 bought it at the Gander in Wilmont WI and have a left handed baitcast reel on it , it is on a gander branded pole , bought that right before a boundry waters trip.I had probably been watching too much fishing on TV
a pair of Okuma cat fish combos with the second drag system to let them run with the bait , picked those up before we did a cat tournament to have more rods.
and the St Croix I bought on our honeymoon at the factory in 00 , wife has been using that the last few years it is a short ultra lite
I had a diawa combo I fished with from about 12-30 alot , it is at the bottom of the harbor , best to teach young kids to cast with spinning rods in land with a weight , he casted about 3 times good before the rod and real went in the drink
so it would seem 7 is my number I tend to fish 2-3 the most the others are for this or that , I have a small boat so get more than 5-6 rods in the boat is a tangle and not a lot of room.
now my son has about that many again. he tries rods and if he doesn't like them they end up in the garage , not paying rent has it's benefits

I have more than I will admit to. When I fish, I want consistency, so I will have up to 8 of the exact same rod/reel combo on the deck rigged with different colors.
I have won a little money in my day fishing, but that is not the driving force in why I do what I do. I don’t get a lot of time off so when I’m on the water, I want to have good equipment.
I don’t begrudge anyone fishing s cane pole. Please don’t judge me if I have multiple rigs.

Too many to count. Close to 100, including ice fishing tip ups and rods. Everything from dainty 'noodle' rods to heavy rods that would make good pool cues, and every thing in between. Charlie

I have a bunch, several fly rods, trout and salmon so 4, 5, 6, and 8 wt. rods. Then trout spin rods, a couple in the camp trailer, then the salt water rods, I like surf fishing and also travel to Mexico often so need the 12 foot travel surf rod.. can’t forget salmon steelhead, 5-6 of them, albacore tuna? Only have two but looking at a new boat so would have to increase salt rods for them. Halibut too. I prefer to have my rods on a boat like my traps, all uniform. That makes life a lot easier when having new people on a boat, show them once and they all are the same. It’s tough if you go out with levelwinds, open reels, spin reels, star drags lever drags and rookie people. Next thing you know you have rats nest on all of them.

I’m purely speculating at this point, but I would say I’m somewhere in the 60-65 range. I don’t even use them hardly. I dipnet salmon, I set a skate for halibut, and I use pots for shrimp and crabs (obviously) so I don’t really use a rod and reel much anymore. But I like to have plenty around for friends and family to use when they’re around Any tips for Tanner crabs? Was thinking of putting out a subsistence pot come October when the season opens.

I don’t have a lot of firsthand knowledge about your area, so your guess is probably as good as mine as far as where to start. I’d recommend putting out as many pots as you can on your subsistence permit, and for bait anything that makes your nostrils burn and your stomach turn will bring in crabs of any variety. Deer heads are a staple around here

From fly rods, surf casting rods, bass rods, crappie rods, trout rods, cat fish rods I have at this time 27 rods. But there's always room for a new rod.
