Well it finally happened. Not only do we no longer have and different cal restrictions on public land and private but also the Cal min in the state has gone down from 243 to 223/ 5.56.

Wish I had not bothered with geting the boys 350s now and stuck with 243 or 7mm 08. O well 350 is a great round for the distance we typically shoot I just like the other rounds a little better.

I use .223 here in southeast for pretty much everything (if I’m intentionally going out looking for bears I use a .243) if I’m hunting by my place in south central I like 7 rem mag (.243 will kill moose fine, but if you run into a brownie it’s less than ideal). I’m not particularly recoil sensitive, but I don’t have any interest in punishing myself unnecessarily, so I choose marksmanship with a small caliber rather than using a monster magnum to offset marginal shots

I guess this means I can use my 35 Rem. now with factory ammo and not mess with trimming the casing shorter to meet the maximum case length?

Is there a difference to the types of firearms that can be used on public and private land?

No, there is no longer a difference to the type of firearm that can be used on public vs. private land. Senate Enrolled Act 280 (2025) changed IC 14-22-2-8 to allow the same rifle cartridges to be used on both public and private land.

What rifles are allowed in firearms season?

The rifle must fire a centerfire cartridge with a bullet diameter of .219 of an inch (5.56 mm) or larger. A hunter may not possess more than 10 such cartridges for each of these rifles while hunting deer.
