I was trying to add a picture, but since I got a new phone it keeps saying the files are too big to upload here. Anyways, I’m cutting a beachside strip of timber right now (cleaning up our leftovers on a helicopter unit we did a few years back) and I found the mother load of clams and oysters on my hike out today, so I had almost a backpack full by the time I made it to the road. I’m cooking oysters over an alder fire (and eating a few raw ones) and a buddy I work with is making clam chowder. Winning.

I eat them right out of the water, but not everyone likes them raw, so I figured why not cook some up. I did manage to dodge making the clam chowder lol

I really like seafood. I'd eat some of them raw with you. It appears you're lucky the otters left you some! Clam chowder (new England Style) is one of my favorite "soup's" too.

I’ll eat most anything I pull out of the waters around here as I find it. Cooking and seasoning is fine, I’m not saying I don’t like steamed oysters and hot sauce, but I just pop them open with a bar wrench and dump about half the salt water out and tip them back

WA State law makes us leave the shells on the beach to legally possess them…... BS,,, but I have a couple cast iron muffins pans that still does a good job if I am harvesting in a visible area.
You have to save the juice and start them in that ,,,then add butter…

Beast and worst place to look is were an old drain field went into the bay…… yummy…..

I’m sure there’s some type of rules for people harvesting for sport, but I have subsistence permits for shellfish, halibut, shrimp, and king crab (which is technically a shellfish, but has a separate permit. Dungeness and tanner crab are covered by the shellfish permit). It is weird they make you leave the shells, I wonder why

I don’t know if I’d eat them if I lived as far inland as Montana, seems like a long journey lol

I first ate raw oysters in Bordeaux, France. The family I was staying with insisted I drink the water in the shell too which being seawater out of the Med I wasn't thrilled about. Alaska's waters would be another thing though.

SC has a Shell recycling area on each of the Islands , you drop off your shells there or take them back where you picked them from.

Oyster eggs attach to oyster shells and they grow in clusters , so the idea is place the shells and a few oysters where you want to be picking from later

here is a new man made oyster habitat they were working on , the sign says something like don't pick these this is a project to get them started in this portion of the sound. I didn't get a close up of the sign.

Wouldn’t want to do it any other way. I missed home so much I’m strongly considering selling off my cabin up north and my snow machines and just sticking to SE year round like I used to. I thought I’d like being further north for winter because I love the cold and snow, but I’m island trash, and I always will be lol

I think i was maybe 14 last time I did that and it was with fresh water muscles back in boy scouts on a camping trip. I found a bunch with my feet when swimming in the lake where we were camping. They could have used something for flavor if I remember right.

The seawater in the oysters covers the seasoning pretty well in my book. Hot sauce is a nice addition, but not needed

I went out today and got a limit of razor clams so I had a bit of fresh food from the beach too. Fried clams tonight. Sorry, no pictures of dinner. It's all gone.

I gave up on shovels quite a few years ago. Use a clam gun now. Stay cleaner and waves never sneak up on me when trying to pull a clam out of the hole.

I usually dig for them in sheltered bays and inlets, so the waves aren’t usually an issue, but a clam gun would be pretty slick

Is that your limit hump, 15?

We have a different razor clam here, makes the best fried clams, also have Softshell (steamers, or (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) clams), and the king around here Hard clams,(mercenaria mercinaria), your littlenecks, cherrystones and chowders. Long Island at one time supplied 75% of the hard clams sold in America. Still all 3 caught commercially here. Along with Atlantic surf clams

Little necks, we called them steamers, are my favorite amongst the wild offerings in my area. Everything else, aside from cockles, tastes like sulfur smells.

Yep, 15 on razor clams, 10 pounds on steamers, 18 oysters and 3 geoducks. I should have put something down for size comparison. Those clams are 6 to 7 inches long. I mostly dig razor clams because the sandy ocean beaches where razor clams live are close by. The others are a drive. I always stock up on them and that is my offering at our potluck at the Rendezvous. Fried, fritters, chowder or noodles with clam sauce. Never have had any leftovers.
