Lost a comet fish today. We have had success for years but in six months we lost two koi and half dozen comets . So I took the deceased one to work and opened him up after an external parasite screening.
I am not at all educated about their anatomy. But I found something odd. Maybe you guys can help.
I honestly don’t know if it is stomach or Swim bladder but it looks like it is twisted and full of gas or air
In the picture on the left hand side. Looks like bubble gum. Any thoughts!?

So are you suggesting that it died because it didn't/wouldn't/couldn't fart?

I have nothing clever to put here.

Now I’m seeing diagrams that the swim bladder may be chambered but that thing still looks angry to me

Okay thank you. Just trying to make sure we aren’t doing something wrong. Other than peeing in the pond

The white is definitely the air bladder.

Thousands of pounds of catfish to my credit. I've "autopsied" more than my share but the cause of death was always the same, trotline. All got a proper burial in cornmeal and hot oil.

Not schooling with the others. Hanging out by aerators with fins clamped. A little wobbly.

Unless another fish was doing the cutting, it was a necropsy.

Stay on task here. This is serious business. We need to resolve the fish fart issue. Was this a female fish by chance? I have known females that I don't believe have ever stopped talking long enough to build up any back pressure.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Have you tested your water? If you don't have the test kit, most pet stores will test a sample pretty cheaply.

The ammonia level should be below 0.5 ppm, the nitrite level should be 0 ppm and the nitrate level under 20 ppm. The pH should ideally be 6.5 to 7.5.

I don't think the bladder is the issue, due to other losses in the recent past. Its likely either water quality or a parasite, especially with clamped fins. What did you do with the filter when you fired up the pond this spring?

I did a parasite scraping and nothing was found. Water quality is good and we change water a little very often. We wash the filter in pond water so not to disrupt the bacteria. The fountain runs year round. I realize fish die but I don’t wanna lose my whole crew due to negligence or something stupid

Add any non iodides salt the pond when fire it up?
