I gave that a try a few times on flats that were right on top of the sign. It worked pretty well MC.
I called it the “Hair of the Dog” Set after that old Nazareth tune! cool

Now that I think about it, when pressure is high and the dung beetles get rolling that might be just the ticket on flat sets!
I bet just a tiny bit of urine or gland would go well with that presentation too.
But then again, maybe less is more.

Good Suggestion MC!

I read a tip on hard to catch coyotes that were heavily pressured by another trapper but have never tried it. It suggested finding where the coyotes were traveling and make a trail set. Then use a lure not right at the trap but straight across from it.

This yearling had a really big frame. It looked like her head was too small for her body.

Thanks BT.

I’ve stumbled across a few things that really made a difference this season.

I'm looking forward to running them by new batch of contestants this fall.

Here is a two of a trio that followed the previous catch.

It must have been girl’s night out. All three were females. Flats were on the house.

The adult up front was accompanied by a yearling in the background.

There is that familiar look again.

Cool expression on this young gal.

Here is another look for those that might have thought the yearling appeared a bit older and heavier in the above photos.

The adult in the foreground had a little weight behind her.

I think this is a prime example of an adult female with a nanny in tow.

BT, none of the females I caught this year were close to lactating.

Here is contestant number three of the triple.

This girl is in her prime and it shows.
I’ve found that quite a few of adult females in this age class can bring a lot of game.
I have mentioned this numerous times, but it bears repeating.
A single set presentation shown to these wise-gals will usually result in a defeat.

I see this behavior year in and year out.
If a coyote is repeatedly defeating or dissecting sets like a surgeon it is probably a 4/5 year old female.
This might be just a local thing, but I bet the same holds true for other areas as well.

I’ve found that the key to snagging these coyotes usually doesn't involve using a different look, smell, or pan placement.
Those variables don’t necessarily level the playing field when dealing with a sharp coyote.

Upping the odds is the real solution.

Although I snag quite a few coyotes just after daylight, I seldom pick up a coyote during the midday or late afternoon hours.
The only exception would be blind trail sets.

This female was picked up on the same day and location as the three girls above making for consecutive quad catches.
I rolled up on my sets just before dark and she was there to greet me. She was really green like she had just arrived on the scene.
That makes back to back catches on this set. The adult male in the last gang catch series preceded her.

I can remember one coyote I caught midday, I could see the set from the road and went by it about 10 in the morning, came back by on my way out a couple hours later and had a big dog coyote bouncing.

Now wolves in particular and coyotes to a lesser degree seem to move a lot here in the morning hours up until about 9 in the winter. I don't know how many times I have been checking wolf traps in the morning and came back by in an hour or two and seen where they crossed behind me. Never yet came back to one in a trap behind me

It all depends on the weather and situation SK.
On sunny days I often see a good bit of coyote movement up to around 8 am.
After 8 activity wanes, and by 9 it is a ghost town.

If it's very overcast or threatening rain I always let sets soak longer.
Scenting conditions for the coyote are as good as they can get at that time.
Coyotes can and will move all day when conditions are right.
I stay away from sets during prime time whether it is dark or light.

If I expect multiple catches I never ride up to that location early.

Bright sunshine is a coyote movement killer. When the sun comes up the coyotes go down.

If dawn breaks without a cloud in the sky the check will usually be earlier in the morning.

I most cases my sets are usually looked at twice a day, so I never have to worry about even remotely crowding our check time regulations.

I notice the same time frame with our coyotes here BC2.
That really holds true when they have a reason to be on their feet.
I've found that opportunity can increase the window well into late morning.

I got a picture of one at 6:48 this morning, sunrise was 6:27

Don't know if it stayed out late or was looking for something

I have caught at least one on up in the day that I know for certain
