Last beaver job I did, there was a large straggler that would not go near bait and got wise enough that it would not even fix the breach in the dam. I could make out a couple of faint paths through the grass where I believed the beaver would walk back away from the water at times. I set dry land snares in the path just in case. Maybe a week went by and I caught a 54 pounder...by the tail!!! I know that fat thing could not even come close to fitting it's body all the way through the snare loop...it had to approach the snare and turn around or something. One way or another it was unlucky enough to somehow get it's tail caught in the noose and I had him. Darndest thing. Wish I had a video of what happened. I guess one lesson I gain from the experience is the more traps we have out, the more opportunities for the critters to get caught.

I have caught beaver by the tail in Belisle 330 and in a snare. Always wondered how it happened but caught was caught. Also had one dead in a snare on dry land. I call snared beaver, beaver on a leash because they are usually very much alive with an attitude to boot.
