just to make shade or to shed water also ?
my grandparents did a pergola ,and they had hooks they would put a shade cloth on it for the summer
did lots of hanging plant baskets from the corners
they weren't trying to sit under it in the rain , they did that after cutting down 3 large shade trees that had be compromised by the tornado

Include the wind shear in your design. I've seen awnings ripped off houses due the wind.

I agree with you on pergola. I think the determining factor is the height of the underside of the roof assembly at the outside of the deck. If you can keep it reasonable (7’6” or above) you’re good. It does look like you eave isnt very high to begin with. It might make sense to have the pitch change of the shed roof transition at the outside plane of your exterior wall. Probably want 2x8s. You might be able to get away with 2x6s on 16” oc. I bet your snow loads aret much.
Also, i would say metal is the way to go on a shed roof under a 3pitch. Standing seam would be the best. Put that on top of some high temp ice and water shield. Id run some wires to for lights or fans if you have room or the inkling

If you would’ve put the post on the end of the deck in the proper position and used taller ones, I could give you some great design ideas.

I’d just have a roof built on the right of the chimney from the existing roof. From the chimney right to the end of the deck.

I'd go with an awning, one with legs like a camper Tapcon pressure treated to a chimney to attach the awning barrel to A support at each end of the barrel to make it stable It might let a little rain in between the house and the awning if the wind is blowing
And fix those gutters at the chimney, they need raised up, I can see where they have stained the bricks if I was going to do a Rv type awning I would set posts on the outside and put a 2x10 up to attach the awning to , it would be pitching it back at the house , I just don't like mounting to brick especially when it will only be supported for a few feet a double awning might make it work , set a post right about up the middle of the chimney but not fastened to the chimney , set another post on the outside and run some 2x10 across , put a tin peak on the wood and mount an awning to each side

I would build a wall around the chimney and then put a metal roof over the entire deck.

Good choice for that situation. You can add to the pole to make it higher for more creative options…. Like more shade. I would figure out were you want the umbrellas to be and drill though the deck and put the support under the deck… And add extras. You can make caps to hide the holes
No more visible stands….

No more visible stands…. It goes through the middle of a table and rests in a heavy base.

Some of the newer models of umbrellas are pretty cool. As mentioned above, they make cantilever models, straight poles, and tilt models. Most are very reasonable. A crank up and down model for the canopy is a must in most area, as wind is the enemy! Glad she found what she is looking for.
Just doing what I want now.
