As a guy that hates using nails.....pre-drill. If you don't feel like swapping out bits to predrill, usually a shot of wd40 on the threads to act as a lube will prevent it. Spit works in a pinch, too.

Pre drill OR try scraping your screw on a bar of soap or wax.The soap/wax trick works.

pre drill the location you are using is to close to the end I own a business when we do wood decks we use car wax on the screws basic old school turtle wax sounds crazy but zero splits

drill for the hole , driver impacts the screw in
pre drill and soap or wax for added bennifit
also stop putting screws in line , the army got you wanting to line stuff up in order don't , is there any reason you couldn't move that bottom screw an inch to the right? would it still catch the board behind it ?
