Two weeks ago, I cut out the comb from a swarm box, and fastened the pieces to empty frames. Opened up the box today, bees had drawn comb between the pieces of comb. Somehow, they cut every rubber band, and drug them out of the hive. That must have been quite the effort. Did they all line up on a gum band, and someone yell….EVERYONE PULL!

(The pic of the frame was from another cut out)

Here’s where the rubber bands were today.

I read just a few days ago, on a bee forum, that bees will cut and remove the rubber bands holding the comb. Apparently it's true.

They chew on them until they cut them loose and then drag them out. I was originally taught to use cotton twine, and they'll do the same. Rubber bands are quicker and easier to use. Cotton twine holds the comb steadier as it doesn't stretch.

I would think it would have to be a group effort. Can’t think a single bee could remove a rubber band.

Everything bees do is a group effort, including mating.
