If sold would these lands not be on the tax base then? I have stated this before we used to give land to settlers to develop, why not do this now? An historic example of what really happens to state lands once gone they are gone,,, And Utah the DNR just bought private lands for habitat and recreation Just think if all lakes and national forests were no longer public. State school trust lands: Minnesota typically had 2 sections per township. The county I lived in all school lands were sold for building and operating the schools and most ran out of money by 1930. Those same lands at current rent would bring in $340,000, or $2650 last in tax year . Thats what politicians do,,, over and over. Besides the lotterry took care of the under funding in most states so we dont need school trust lands

Take a look at Wyoming and how public access for hunting is managed. Much of the state is still checkerboard federal land which provides lots of public access opportunities. There is also state land the public can access. In the parts of Wy that is not checkerboard federal land and there is much less public access, the state actually contracts with private landowners to allow public access. Having federal land is not the only way to have access for recreation. I am in favor of turning much of the checkerboard federal land over to the states to manage. Why should the state have to contract with them to allow public access? Wyoming is one of the only states I know of that allows private landowners to block off all access to public land and treat it as their own. You will see ranches for sale in Wyoming listed as "100,000 acres, 20,000 deeded". That means they are actually only selling 20,000 acres, but the other 80,000 is "public land" owned by us, but the ranch controls access and uses it as it's own. Did you know that Wyoming doesn't allow camping on state land, period? Or trapping without getting written permission, and that is totally up to the local state person in charge? You must go to them and beg permission, just like with a private landowner, and if they don't like trapping, or don't like you, you are tough out of luck. As a general rule, I am not against the state or local level managing it, but Wyoming was a poor example to use. I am and always will be against allowing out public land to be sold, whether state or federal. Once it is gone, it is gone forever.

All land is government land, even the land they sell to the citizenry. Would the demand that .gov own state land for public use be a form of socialism?

All land is government land, even the land they sell to the citizenry. Would the demand that .gov own state land for public use be a form of socialism? Kind of. Just the ownership ( land ) of the means of production is Socialism. People like it when they get to do what they want on the public land, but not so much when the public ( urban dwellers) restrict their fun . The early history, when America was so great, there was the constant privatization of public land. I'm not saying there should be no public land, just that it is not some great thing. China must be a paradise, since there is no private land, "The Democrats' Plan To Nationalize Land, Democratic Socialism In Action A Wall Street Journal editorial of July 10th lays out what the House Democrats’ most recent socialist scheme (H.R.3195 - Land and Water Conservation Fund Permanent Funding Act) is all about. In June, the Democrats who sit on the House Natural Resources Committee passed H.R.3195, which is currently winding its way through the House. This bill mandates permanent funding of $900 million to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) each year. This would be a whopping two and a half times greater than the Fund’s average annual expenditures over the past 15 years. Just what does the LWCF do? The Fund was created in 1964. It is primarily funded by federal oil and gas drilling royalties. Its main activity has been to gobble up private land (read: nationalize) and put it under government ownership, management, and political control. Among other things, this means that the newly nationalized lands will be poorly managed." Source: Forbes 2019 Sure seem to be a lot of Democrats on Tman.

Why should the state have to contract with them to allow public access? The state doesn't "have to," they choose to contract with private owners to allow public access. It is in the interest of the state to have privately owned land available for public access for hunting where there is limited publicly owned land, so that's what they do. Do you think the public should be able to access private land for hunting without permission? I sure don't want anyone hunting my land without my permission. In Va, that would be called "tresspassing," and is against the law.

Public land in most of the west should not be sold for the simple fact the more development means more water use. Until peaple understand the fact that we are running out of ground water and mismanaging it Public land should not be sold of for development.

Sell it but only to first time buyers. Get people out of cities and more toward self sufficient living. If you mean the ones that buy 3 acres and then think they own the whole county no thanks.
