I'm a nurse and have seen plenty of joint replacements done in the hospital setting. Older people do a whole lot better as far as recovery and pain compared to people in their 40s. A majority of knees will go home the same day as surgery. The most important advice I can give you though is to get up and move as soon as you can. Don't lay around and let your knee and muscles lock up.

My surgeon at the VA says the first month after you won't believe you did it to yourself, 2nd month is OK, 3rd month you can't believe you didn't do it sooner.

I never took any pain drugs since I never had any pain. Sure, some dull aches but no real pain.

Had right knee done the day after deer season in 2023 had the left knee done day after deer season in 2024 . Had to lift my leg two foot off the bed and walk hundred foot a walker and go home the same day. Compared to rotator cuff surgery it was a complete piece of cake.

I had full replacements on both knees 6 months apart when I was 48.

I had no cartilage left in my joints. Right knee had 3 bone spurs the size of a man's thumb, the left knee only had one. But it was the size of a D cell battery according to the orthopedic surgeon. I'm not kidding when I say that I was ready to suck start a 1911.

I'm 58 now. I absolutely hate kneeling on them to this day. It feels very weird.

Also don't like steep steps or ladders. But I make my way through it.

I'm glad that I had it done, but I also know I will probably have to get them done again.

It was the end of coon hunting for me. It can be a challenge sometimes when making yote and cat sets.
