Guys, when you were cutting your teeth in starting to learn, what famous trapper did you want to emulate? I know there’s lots of guys from different times. For me it was probably ej Dailey. I guess I read more of his stuff than any one else.. and there just was a kind of mystique about his trapline.
Stand by your principles, Stand by your guns, and victory complete and permanent is sure at last. Abraham Lincoln

For me it goes waaaaay back. At fifteen I read Stanley Vestal's: "Joe Meek the Merry Mountain Man". Hence I wanted to be a beaver hunter and mountain man.
....Still do. God willing and they don't take away my trapping rights.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Charlie Dobbins. I started reading trapping articles at an age when I was just too young to understand a lot of what I was reading. Charlie wrote in a style that I could comprehend. And it was clear he thought like the animal did, which was something I wanted to emulate even at a very young age.
Proudly banned from the NTA.
Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Boco, Ryan Mccloud for wilderness trapping and living off the land skills. Danny for desert stuff. White for finances, Keith c for birds and plants, and on and on . Heck A lot of members here that think of themselves as average Joe Are men to look up to and learn from In so many areas of life not just trapping. but life in general.
Guys from the past get romanticize in sure. But to be honest I think this forms membership has more to offer and is actually possible to tap into today.
PF brings up a good point. There are guys on this forum that are probably as good as or better than anyone else who has ever set a trap. They aren't famous, but have plenty to offer.

I did not know there was any such thing as a famous trapper until I came to this place. Still probably couldn’t name any of them or explain why they are famous. I just trap my little trap line.
Now as far as folks who have helped me immensely. I’d have to say Newt Sterling and Ron Jones. Only met and learned from Newt once. But, I talk to Ron quite a bit. I’ve taught him a few things over the years and he has taught me a lot of things.
Stop over cooking your meat! It isn’t gamey, it’s over cooked!
Gordon Ramsey, maybe…
