…. What’s going on here ?

Leviticus 26:29: "And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat."

Numbers 31:17: "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

In the Leviticus passage those darn Israelites have done ticked off the LORD again and He's gonna smite them with one heck of a famine. Those Israelites sure were a good example to us Gentiles of what not to do when dealing with the Almighty.
Numbers passage they was supposed to kill them all and Moses was ticked off but Moses allowed them the virgins likely for concubine use as they came of age.

Centuries before, Moses had alerted the Israelites that their future would be marked by either blessing or malediction. They would enjoy blessings if they kept God’s commandments, but they would bring suffering upon themselves if they rejected his righteous ways. One of the terrible consequences was that the Israelites would be reduced to eating their own children. This actually occurred after God abandoned the faithless, disobedient nation into the hand of the Babylonians.

God did not command the eating of their children, but this was more like a warning of what would happen as a result of punishment from God for being disobedient.

The numbers verse to me is much more difficult to interpret. The midianites led the Israelites into temptation and sexual sin. Therefore they were punished by God for this and those that committed the sins were ordered to be killed along with the sons for fear of vengeance. Apparently this all fit in the cultural time period.

Wolfdog the old testament is just as important and the new. Kind of like history have to know where you have been and where you came from so you can learn move on and not repeating. We can learn alot of how the isrealites were treated and why, and if we don't change our ways you don't think God won't do the same to us your crazy.
