I have had my dog point 3 skunks in as many weeks. Different areas all three times. We have a decent population skunks here but I was wondering if this is just coincidence or if they are more active this time of year. It seems late in the year for them to have young in a den they're trying to feed. Two of the skunks were pretty small and I assume this year's young or possibly last year. One was a monster mature skunk. Two of the points were in the morning a couple hours after dawn and one was in the heat of the afternoon, probably 3 hours before dusk. Just curious about this activity. I'm in northern Montana.

I've seen more skunk roadkill in the last few weeks, mostly young of the year. I think it's likely they are just developed enough now to be ranging out far from the dens they were born in. Also, grasshoppers are starting to be available in bigger numbers, which is one of skunks' preferred foods.

If you’re seeing skunks often I’d guess you have a good amount of them enough to set for now would be the year to do it.

Thanks Keith, makes sense. LD, yeah I definitely plan on targeting them. Was just more curious as to why I've seen more lately as opposed to other times of the year I've been running my bird dog in the same areas.

Could be anything maybe dispersal time or weather conditions that has them looking for new opportunities. When skunks were plentiful here it was common to get 6-10 out of the same cages back then in one location.
