I generally pull my traps if I see fresh sign. They are a real pain to release especially if you are set with a drag. Here they make a big circle so once they are out of the area all is good for quite a while. On my bobcat walk throughs I use two traps and set them 16 to 18 inches pan to pan. Lions will generally step over both pans on the way through. I did catch a 50 or so pound kitten a couple of years ago. Only lion I have caught in 40 plus years,
I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

We have so many lions right now DWR is giving permits for free all year long to lower the amount !
Turning the whole state into experts on getting lions, except no one is getting lions LOL, everyone saying the DWR don't know anything about them, LOL
Yea they are out there and yea there is a lot of them, and yea curiosity will kill the cat, people are as dumb as they look sometimes, they just have to have patience and study up just a bit on how to attract them and take them, but no they don't have the time, they figure to drive all over and see one then take it out.
I say good for the cats, they are nicer looking in the winter any way and much easier to call or trap then as well !!

we have had them on Southern WI and it made it's way to ILL and got hit by a car near Rockford
they can move a long ways
we have also had WI wolves tracked over to Ohio
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

No reintroduction in Oregon. We've always had a stable population. Since they ended hound hunting for them in 1994 they have increased ten-fold.

I would not worry about it. If those boys catch it tell them to call the game warden and let him deal with it.

Danny is right. If you catch one just call the authorities for help. Several caught around our state over the years. Mark Jine had a great post on here when he got a lion in one of his bobcat sets out in western Nebraska. Called the game and parks, they came out and did their thing. Tranquilized, took all the data they needed, mark got some pics with it, and no harm done on a species protected here with limited hunting opportunity. Have a friend had same thing happen. Got a nice big lion in a bobcat sets. Called for help, they did their thing, he got pics with it, all was good. Both held well in Bridger 3s, bait and a skunky lure same as for bobcats was the catch set. Jim

Last I seen they have a season in the Black Hills Forest district but no restrictions in the rest of the state here open all year, we had open season on wolves east river years back until the Feds got involved.

This beast showed up in a walk through last February. I didn't realize lions will breed any time of year. It was like turning loose a bobcat. That's a number 3 Bridger for reference. There where no adult tracks in the area. I left carcasses near the site but I'm pretty sure the cat had been abandoned for some time. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/08/full-49774-266068-20250217_135600_resized.jpg)

I told this story before but first one I caught was late 70's in CO. Victor #2 longspring. Tied to the root of of some oak brush. Necked down spot at a spring. Hung a rabbit over the trail. Fenced it down some. Put a rock with a wad of grass ontop and another rock atop the grass. Some bobcat pee on the grass. Pretty popular cat set back then. First catch was a ringtail cat. Didnt know what it was. Had to show it to my dad to find out. That lion broke the root trap was tied to. Jaws didnt pop out. I tracked it about a mile into some rimrock and got nervous. Had grampas 22 h and r for a gun. Hoped it would tangle somewhere but didnt happen. Came back the next day with dogs. Started at the rimrock and caught up about a mile away. Trap was on the right front foot on the two outside pads.

Good story Danny … my only lion mounded up and twisted out … which aggravated me as we can keep them here … not many in East Texas … did bust a juvenile male off a pipeline with 30-30 when I was 15 though

Jim Problem is my Neanderthal brain takes over and Predators =bad, Big Predators where I live with family and animals = much more bad. I don't think the authorities would take it with them and it's not welcome at my farm. Best if is just not caught or seen for my integrity and law abiding reputation to stay intact. I suspect it won't be around the area long with their large range.

They are as dumb or dumber than a bobcat, they will stick their foot in a trap just to see what it is. They are not that much harder than a bobcat to release and generally much less aggressive. Much less likely to come after you, after you release them than a bobcat. Also they are very easy to choke out and kill, I have never done so, but I know from reliable sources that this is so. So before I had a trap release pole, when I was simply using a catch pole to release nontargets, I would not tighten the noose all the way down on one, I would just snug it up enough they couldn't slip it off and use the pull to hold the lion away while taking the trap off. Of course if you are trying to release it by yourself and it is a good sized lion this is easier said than done, in that case you may have to either get some help or choke it down some. Probably you and your boys, no problem, just your boy by himself trying to release it, may be to tough.

They say the mountain lions are moving into Oklahoma by using rivers as travel corridors. West to east. Makes sense.
One was hit by a car about 50 miles east of me. It likely would have had to have used the river that runs a mile through my place.
I have never seen one in Oklahoma and I think 99% of the sightings are not legit. However, I know one may have crossed me.
I just need another one to walk through in December/January.
Cool topic. Spouse saw a dead mt lion on 287 in the OK panhandle years ago, he stopped to get a good look and I reported it to your Div. of Wildlife. They had said none in that area until then, lol.
