I generally pull my traps if I see fresh sign. They are a real pain to release especially if you are set with a drag. Here they make a big circle so once they are out of the area all is good for quite a while. On my bobcat walk throughs I use two traps and set them 16 to 18 inches pan to pan. Lions will generally step over both pans on the way through. I did catch a 50 or so pound kitten a couple of years ago. Only lion I have caught in 40 plus years,
I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

We have so many lions right now DWR is giving permits for free all year long to lower the amount !
Turning the whole state into experts on getting lions, except no one is getting lions LOL, everyone saying the DWR don't know anything about them, LOL
Yea they are out there and yea there is a lot of them, and yea curiosity will kill the cat, people are as dumb as they look sometimes, they just have to have patience and study up just a bit on how to attract them and take them, but no they don't have the time, they figure to drive all over and see one then take it out.
I say good for the cats, they are nicer looking in the winter any way and much easier to call or trap then as well !!

we have had them on Southern WI and it made it's way to ILL and got hit by a car near Rockford
they can move a long ways
we have also had WI wolves tracked over to Ohio
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

No reintroduction in Oregon. We've always had a stable population. Since they ended hound hunting for them in 1994 they have increased ten-fold.

I would not worry about it. If those boys catch it tell them to call the game warden and let him deal with it.

Danny is right. If you catch one just call the authorities for help. Several caught around our state over the years. Mark Jine had a great post on here when he got a lion in one of his bobcat sets out in western Nebraska. Called the game and parks, they came out and did their thing. Tranquilized, took all the data they needed, mark got some pics with it, and no harm done on a species protected here with limited hunting opportunity. Have a friend had same thing happen. Got a nice big lion in a bobcat sets. Called for help, they did their thing, he got pics with it, all was good. Both held well in Bridger 3s, bait and a skunky lure same as for bobcats was the catch set. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Last I seen they have a season in the Black Hills Forest district but no restrictions in the rest of the state here open all year, we had open season on wolves east river years back until the Feds got involved.

This beast showed up in a walk through last February. I didn't realize lions will breed any time of year. It was like turning loose a bobcat. That's a number 3 Bridger for reference. There where no adult tracks in the area. I left carcasses near the site but I'm pretty sure the cat had been abandoned for some time. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/08/full-49774-266068-20250217_135600_resized.jpg)

I would not worry about it. If those boys catch it tell them to call the game warden and let him deal with it. That's what I would do. They have connections to get with people who could tranquilize it.
My new car has a button for pretty much everything. Even has one that says rear wiper. Still too afraid to try that one.
