Just got word that the order was filled and skunk prices will be dropping back down to previous market prices. Short and sweet but just a flash in the pan.

It seems like the demand lasted for about a week. Was that it?

We need to get influencers to wear wild caught, fur garments. Preferably made from opposums, raccoon or coyote, if I'm going to have a chance of profiting from it around here.

A week? You haven’t been paying attention to the market the last half year eh?…..
If I couldn’t get my fur to FHA and had to settle for GFW price, that’d have sucked for me…….lol
The multi species trappers don’t wait for a hot market, and it pays.

You’re right about the influencers. All it takes is one movie or show to kick it off.

We need a sarcasm font for the sarcastically impaired. I saw the March sales results. My point was it didn't last long.

We need a steady, reliable permanent market for wild caught fur. Until someone or someones develop that, there's going to be no decent return on most wild fur.

I'm happy there's always been a reliable steady market for skunks. Everything thing else I have in my neck of the woods and trapped most of my life has been up and down.

One order for skunks and that's it from a buyer? Wow that is a flash in the pan.
I wonder how many thousands that was and what THEIR final payment was.

Sorry KC, you're right. I think most of us knew that this fad would be over quick. I'm still waiting to hear something a little more concrete. I'll ask "my guy"

My fur buyer was at the spring auction and said it was two buyers who got into a bidding war and that's what drove up the price. A close friend talked to his tannery in Canada who said they had just finishe filling that order so skunk prices should come back down. This will be good for the gland and essent market.

Great marketing ploy-or rather terrible. Take your pick. Good thing is for everyone who believes it there will be less people trapping skunks and less competition LOL. Think about it people-2000 skunks filled an order LMFAO. Ya right. How many Orthadox Jewish Men are there on this planet people-OMG already. Remember the pale otter guys-just saying. JMHO

"my guy" says that the info your fur buyer is lying to you.
He pretty much echos Mbcoonguy's statement.

My understanding is that is just a certain portion of the Hasidic Jewish community that is ordering/wearing this particular hat. Everything they do is very secretive. It is entirely possible 2,000 skunks could have filled the order.

Right now there is so much speculation and he said she said and gossip and idle chatter that nobody really knows what is actually happening in this particular market. I’m more than happy to sit back and watching this play out. Perfect off-season entertainment.

Yes Wissmiss-you've probably been in this business as long as I have or maybe longer-but I find it extremely hard to believe that after all the guys suddenly wanting skunks after the sale etc..that it was a flash in the plan. But either way I am dryland trapping this fall instead of beavers LOL Guess we'll see where it goes

Yep, I guess someone could call GFW and ask if they're still offering the same price. That would end some speculation wink

The only 6 I had at the time I have markets for most of them the rest I’d get tanned but never have enough to send in.

2000 skunks at 42 per hat would equal less than 50 hats.

I was told that they were buying tails no matter what month they were skun. Don't know whether the price would be different between a august tail or a October tail. It's all about the white in the tail.

Where are these hats sold, Israel? How many makers are there, maybe 3. What is the actual process to produce a hat? We knew the major players and the felting process when beaver were in demand. I would have thought that by now, the T man people would have been all over this. What has been the historical yearly sales of these hats. I would imagine 6,000 hides will make 140 ish hats. Is that a lot on the world scale?
There are a few who know these answers.

Maybe there’s a TV series over the pond about some Orthodox family boss sporting a skunk tail hat, while his minions wear marten tail hats? …lol
If you check them hats out, picture one made of skunk, it’d probably look pretty cool!
