I would not mind having a skunk farm. Pet skunks, especially some of the rare colored ones, sell for very decent money and the taxidermy market is good for the old ones.

I might buy some breeders at some point.

A lot of my friends used to put baby skunks in paper bags with starting fluid in it, for a few seconds, to anesthetize them and then scrape the sacks out with a scalpel. They had to be careful not to leave the skunk in the bag to long.

I don’t know enough about the tanning process but will these summer skunks survive the dressing process without falling a part. Wonder if they end users know what they’re doing?

My experience is that summer pelts tan just fine. The leather is darker and there isn’t any underfur. But it a summer skunk still looks like a skunk. Same with other species.

I know buyers don’t like springy late caught coon because they don’t dress well and you end up losing some pelts. I guess skunk tails is a whole different world LOL They must be hungry for skunk big time.

In my opinion, when buyers say that late caught coon don’t dress well, they are referring to fur quality and not the pelt itself. Late caught coon the underfur is starting to shed and the fur just looks messy and not nice to look at. But that is my opinion.

I've tanned summer mink fur. Unless you get a pelt at shedding season it should tan ok, it's just a matter of having less leather and shorter, thinner fur.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

We sold 8 for a friend and $50 was the top two. He said that he really did not want summer skunks. I directly asked him that question......jk

Funny how skins won't dress,..when those skins are not in demand

Did he sell July and August coon and yes there wasn’t a season for a number of years? Or is trapping prime fur been a racket over all these years? LOL
If you can sell them more power to you. I am just questioning the quality of which is a very expensive hat and why they wouldn’t want better skins but apparently they don’t care as long as there’s white in it.

Blackhammer, I've been comparing summer skunks tails to fall/winter tails. Not much difference in the coarse fur. Now the leather I'm not sure of. Seems as if they just use the tails for these hats from what I've read

I’m sure you’re right. Be interesting to see if there is a premium on larger fully prime with whiter tails this fall. This skunk thing is one of the more bizarre things I’ve seen following the fur trade that’s for sure.
