My oldest son bought me a 23&Me kit last Christmas. I finally swabbed my mouth and sent it off.

It appears I'm about as red-blooded, white American as I can be. I can already trace a couple ancestors back to pioneer Virginia & North Carolina, then Georgia. A couple fought in the Revolutionary War (against Britain) and several that fought in the Civil War (for the Confederacy.) 23&Me just confirmed my heritage.

I am descended from 3 Pilgrims, who arrived in 1620 on the Mayflower. Most of the people in Jamestown, who survived the dying year and the Powhatton Massacre are grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins of mine. The first of those arrived in 1607.

I had 27 many great grandfathers fight on our side during the Revolutionary War and 1 fight for the British. I had 14 fight in just the Battles of New Garden and Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina. Of those 14, 12 were disowned by the Quakers for fighting and 1 was disowned by the Amish for fighting.

I helped my cousin Savell with some of his genealogy and all of his people are cousins of mine.

I have little doubt Swamp Wolf is likely a cousin too. There just wasn't many people in early Virginia and North Carolina and most of the people that came were extended family.

Wife got me the Ancestry dna kit for my birthday, back in March. Pretty interesting stuff. Had some family history that had been passed down through stories, but found more and was able to find documents that supported or confirmed many of those stories.

Most of my ancestry is pre-revolutionary war. Had a few Quakers in the family that went rogue. Family in N. Carolina were instrumental in getting the Bill of Rights included, necessary before N Carolina would join the newly established nation. Had family on both side in the war of northern aggression. After the war, my dad’s side settled in Tom Green County TX. Pretty amazing how much documentation can be found dating back a couple hundred years ago.

May want to get your data copied off the 23ANDME site and delete the account.

Pretty sure they filed bankruptcy and are selling all the data they have.

Side note - I found it is kind of weird how the DNA data changes. My percentages on the Ancestry site have changed quite a bit since I did it years ago. The more people they get the more refined it gets. They update it a few times a year. My Swedish should be right around 25% and it has varied from 35 down to 8.

I do like seeing the human migration data. Crazy how it lines up.

Years ago i know China had composed the world's largest data bank of the western worlds DNA.. They aren't gathering their competitions DNA so they can hand out Christmas presents. Biological warfare is being developed if not being used/tested and your DNA could be more dangerous than your social security #. Trouble is they don't need everyone's just a majority to be dangerous, which everyone that wants it probably already has enough gathered for the population of North America. Those DNA data banks have also been used to solve crimes, something old Savell should have considered.

I don't trust none of that DNA nonsense. My first cousin tells me that her dad, my uncle, got one and claims it shows zero native american DNA even though we have a documented third great grandmother who was cherokee.

Find a Grave has been useful lately in tracing back my maternal lines. Finally found just how granny was able to get her membership into the Daughters of the American Revolution as all of our McLeod ancestors were tories. Turns out her mother's Williams are direct descendants of Colonel James Williams, posthumously promoted to Brigadier General, who was the highest ranked continental casualty at King's Mountain. Ironic considering he undoubtedly had fought my paternal ancestors in that part of the Carolinas.
On my mother's side I've been able to put to rest a long held shameful suspicion. Not a single yankee to be found. We've long suspected union sympathy on that side, her father's, in North Alabama and while I haven't found any CSA enlistments I did find Alabama state militia. On her mother's I confirmed papa Cain's enlistment and presence at Gettysburg under Oates. I also surprisingly found fourth great grandparents buried just a few miles south of me in the county. I've yet to locate the graves as it's a family plot on private land. I'm hoping to learn more as the Little surname is common here and apparently in many of the older families here.
Oh, and mother's mother's people, Pardue/Cain/Fuller, are just as crossed up and crisscrossed as my father's people. Find a Grave bounces all over back and forth across Alexander City Cemetery. Seems they are all related and I'm going to need to diagram it all out it.

DNA isn't nonsense. It's the genetic connections. If there is no genetic connection....then there is no genetic connection. You might want to dig a little deeper. You probably aren't as related as you think you are to that person.

Find a Grave obviously isn't genetic, but is very useful in finding household members burial locations and gathering birth and death dates...related or not.

Oh, I know DNA itself is legit. I just don't trust the mass marketers handling DNA in bulk. Surely you know the chain of evidence thing.

But yes, there's lot's of momma's babies daddy's maybes throughout our histories and I'm not totally opposed to learning the truth as I've got other not talked about stories held back that I had to dig to ferret out. Maybe I should have my own DNA tested by a vendor I trust and isn't in the market to profit off it.
There was a similar stink on my paternal line when a group did a genome study of patrilineal McLeods from around the world to confirm or deny our historical claim as one of the norse clans of Scotland. They found both norse and british/celtic in varying enough degree to go both ways on the claim. Meanwhile, many of us who do know history of the clans know that not all of the name are of the castle but we are all family.

I thought about completing an Ancestry.com kit to compare to the 23&Me results I just got.....for the chain of custody reason you mentioned.

I've thought of doing a duplicate with the same company, leave off my middle name or something. change my DOB by accident. See how close it comes back.

Most people, who think they have Cherokee blood in the US have African American blood instead, from early Virginia and North Carolina. Many are descended from two uncles and 3 cousins of mine who married free black women in the early 1600s. Besides some black women who they bought and married, their descendants were never slaves. The first black, female indentured servants who were brought in 1619 and free of their indenture in 1626 were married to white men. Their daughters and succeeding generations of granddaughters were too. There was a severe shortage of women.

A high percentage of successful black people, including many black celebrities are descended from them.

The Melungeons are mostly descended from them too.

Most Southern whites, who have small amounts of African DNA are descended from the first white men from the Jamestown area, who married the very first black women in the US.

Absolutely true and I've long suspected my mother's Gibbs may have some melungeon roots. Reason being is that line is very tight lipped and very scanty records, also Gibson is a known melungeon surname. My Gibbs also came down through the mountains, traced back through a single link, from Virginia. The very area melungeons are known from. Though zero documentation exists and questions get denials. Of course that would be expected.

The cherokee grandmother does come with photographs, tintype, and documentation though my grandfather would deny her as well. Supposedly our dark complexion, brown eyes and bottle black straight hair is greek according to some on that side. Just how a greek got to that part of the country at that time period is yet to be explained or that the menfolk can't grow decent beards and aren't hairy.

I did the Ancestry.com deal and found out the family stories of a Great Grandmother being a full-blooded "First Nations" gal (I'm of French Canadian lineage) was all baloney. Not a drop of native American/First Nations DNA in me. All the rest matched up to what we'd figured though.

It's unlikely, but actually possible to have none of a great grandparents DNA. It's actually possible for a full sibling to share no DNA with you. You get half of each parents DNA. You and a sibling could theoretically get different DNA from each.

Most people are related to each other a great many times. A lot of distant cousins, are cousins so many different ways, that they will test as closely related, instead of distant.

At this late date I'm not sure a DNA could sort it all out as I have a great grandmother on dad's side that was supposed to have Chickasaw in her background but that is even less supported by documentation being merely a comment by family members.

Thing is, if they go back far enough your Swedes were likely from around the black sea and weren't officially Swedes yet. The Thracians emigrated in mass to southern Sweden about 2500 years ago.

They have a lot of his documents, including his draft card and his pedigree on Family Search.

The Statons got off the boat in the early 1600's. Not sure when my moms side, the Cobbs, arrived but they were supposed to have "indian" blood. According to my DNA test some of my descendants belonged to a tribe, just not one on the American continent.

23&Me filed bankruptcy a while back. The company was bought by same person and continued ops.

The data changes as more and more generic info is compiled. The DNA companies advise you to continually check your info on their app for updates. Your ancestry will gradually be narrowed down more accurately. I learned this by reading up on it before I participated.

It also says I am 1% the Netherlands, it just doesn't fit on the screenshot.

It originally said I was only 4% German. At one point it said I was 68% England and North West Europe. It changes a lot everytime they post new data.

Populations were never static. Countrys' borders and even the countries themselves are mostly relatively recent. Most European countries border multiple other countries. A man made line you could step over makes your nationality different in a fraction of a step.

The data basically just says I'm Western European.

When I first did it, it showed 18% Ireland. That swapped to 18% Scotland.

The Scandinavian / Swede part, I know as true. My grandmother went back over on vacation and stayed a week with her relatives in Sweden and saw the house her family grew up in. Her mother (my great great grandmother) came over on the boat and only spoke Swede).

It's already been used to find a killer. The cops found a suspects sibling had done one of those tests so they got that DNA to match to the brother.
