Which states have separate licenses for animal damage control work vs fur harvesting (trapping) and is the animal damage control license above and beyond the requirements of a fur trapping license?

Ohio is separate. There's a test you need to take every 3 years for the nuisance permit

WA you have to have both for ADC work, but the WCO permit is no charge. You do need to take their class to get the WCO permit.

I only need my regular trapping license to trap ADC jobs in MN.

You need a permit in NY, the manual is about 2" thick, said no thanks...

NC is separate. Trapping license for fur. WCA license for damage control. You do not have to have a trapping license to get a WCA license but WCA requires an initial two day course and ongoing education credits for the annual renewals.

Illinois is separate. Several different classes of Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator permit. Involves a test that is not easy.

Georgia is not seperate BUT in order to charge for your services and set out of season and cleared for non furbearers you need a free NWCO permit that you must pass a test to get. Once permitted it's automatically renewed each year when you buy your annual license.

Pennsylvania requires a test and a separate license.

Alabama is license and a free letter from your district biologist.

Need a NWCO license in NY. Have to take a test and after passing you get to pay $50 a year license fee! You also have to keep a log of catch species and disposal. Log must be submitted when renewing license. If you have taken beaver cable restraint class cable restraints can be used for beaver but only on nuisance jobs! Cable restraints cannot be used during fur season. Trapping license is separate and all regular regulations apply.

WI 29.337 allows the land owner or agent of land owner to take non game animals for the purpose of nuisance animal removal

All persons assisting a landowner (i.e., acting as an agent of a land-
owner) in the removal of animals causing damage must possess
the following in accordance with NR 12.10(3)(c):
a) A valid hunting or trapping license if shooting or trapping the
animal.
b) Written approval from the landowner, which includes:
• Name, address, and phone number of landowner and per-
son removing wild animals
• Property location and removal activities
• Authorized time period of removal
• Species of animals authorized for removal
• Signature of the landowner or lessee and date.

The last few beaver ADC jobs I did in Nebraska, when regular season was closed, required me or the land owner to contact CO. CO inspected the area and emailed me a special damage control permit. No charge for the permit.

A few years ago in early fall the CO told the land owner the open season is only a month away, just wait.

Mo. has no ADC license.

CT has separate licenses. Annual trapping license is just for in season fur bearers. NWCO license (2 years) is year round and also covers almost all nuisance animals besides fur bearers; bats, squirrels, birds, etc. Some of our fur bearers require an "out of season" permit (beaver, otter, fox, coyote, mink). Do not need a Trapping license for NWCO work, but NWCO's can utilize the animals for fur or consumption.

In Iowa, you need a NWCO license separate from your fur harvesters license.

MD is separate. Initial licensing requires a test and fee. Year end reporting and yearly renewal fee.

And I hope nobody is trying to change this.

helped a bunch of friends , family , and a few neighbors.
the only reason to change it would be someone looking to make bank in the ADC industry by forcing people to pay for a contractor to come in and do the work and charge a lot more.
wouldn't be the first time we saw such a thing , an industry pushing for a quick paycheck that actually makes the issue worse because people won't or can't pay it.

I am not familiar with what WI defines as game animals versus non game animals but the above does seem reasonable. But it only applies to non game animals. What about game animals?

Deer , Bear , Turkey all require a crop damage tag to be taken out of season , as I understand it anyone with a valid hunting license can work as the agent of the land owner yet but the land owner must apply for the crop damage tags.

holding a hunting or trapping license is really their way of making sure the agent is legal to hunt or trap with minimal qualifications and person with back child support trying to find a way to hunt.

in WI they tied out hunting, fishing and trapping license numbers to SS so that they can track people owing back child support and you can't hunt , trap or fish till you pay up.

Sounds similar to what we have except that a WCA license is required to do any nuisance control work outside of season for compensation with the only exception being beaver. With a WCA license, we can write the permit to take the offending critter/s except for deer, bear or turkey and protected species. For deer, bear or turkey, we have to get a permit issued by a warden or biologist.

Two day class and test required to get WCA license and annual renewal. Quarterly reporting also.
