Question about the rustoleum/acetone dip. Once the paint is thinned, can it be stored? Shelf life after thinning?

Thanks.

I don’t believe so because your acetone will evaporate

Can you add more acetone to thin the mix again? Or does it change the paint also during the evaporation?

That I am unsure of. I usually have enough traps to where there’s not much leftover dip worth keeping.

I don't dip in paint but seems likely if you store leftovers in a sealed container like a p[aint can it would keep after all acetone comes in a can

That's what I was thinking of doing. I wasn't sure if the mix would go bad, or have a really short shelf life.

Get a funnel, pour the left over paint mix BACK INTO THE METAL ACETONE CAN. Tighten that lid as best you can. I have saved mine for up to 1.5 years in the metal cans but don't try any plastic bucket or container for the obvious reasons. Plenty of good info on Youtube about different mixes for trap dip so would direct you to view them for their mixes AND storage also. My Experience. ..............................the mike

I tried it once and it didn't keep. Had a different consistency later that extra acetone would not fix.

Posted the same time as Wife. It may work in the acetone can but did not work in a metal paint can with metal lid.

I've got it in metal paint cans and in the acetone can.
I've had absolutely no problems
It settles and has to be stirred
Have been doing this for 4-5 years with no problems

Turkey Time. What problems did you have in the paint can that couldn't be solved by stirring?

Paint seemingly had separated and wouldn't smooth out with more acetone.

Interesting 50/50 split maybe the acetone breaks down the color molecules over time Wonder if the brand of paint makes a difference Did anyone compare water based with oil based paint?

The top sheet of hardened stuff has to be remover, we used to then screen the rest. That is years ago with the old oil bases paints in a boat yards in the '50s

Yes, but don’t let it get too cold. I’ve used it the next season. I can’t say I’ve kept it for longer than that. I out it in paint cans bought new at the paint store. I just keep adding to it.

Thanks everyone.

Regarding the ratio, I am reading and hearing more and more about going 60/40 Acetone to paint, or even 2:1 acetone to paint.

Do this and it will keep during storage. Have to mix well before using.

I tried storing mine back in the cans and it turned to a big block of jello. Not sure why but it was sealed air tight.

Remnant storage aside, the other alternative that is recommended is mineral oil vs. acetone. I've tried both and acetone dries faster and to me give a more durable finish. No more mineral spirits for me.

1 part Rustoleum rusty metal primer : 1 part Rustoleum flat black paint : 2 parts acetone. Flat color about like a Hershey chocolate bar.

Kyle, the short answer is yes.

From www.laballey.com/blogs/blog/how-to-store-acetone-and-paint?

Acetone is not only used as a paint removal aid; it is also sometimes used as a paint thinner. Therefore, paints containing acetone must also comply with safe storage regulations. Paints [ as well as acetone ] are flammable, heat-sensitive, and can produce noxious fumes. Proper storage is essential to your health and safety, as well as prolonging the shelf life of your products. Like acetone itself, paint should be stored away from heat and ignition sources to mitigate the risk of fire. Ideally, the paint will be stored in a flammable-proof cabinet, in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area. You may need to arrange climate control and mechanical ventilation.

Keep in mind that acetone will evaporated until it reaches it stabilization partial pressure in a sealed container. Always store with a secured, sealed cap or cover. Acetone is extremely flammable in and of itself and is toxic to inhale. Do not store in an inhabited space. And with paints, cold temperatures will cause oil based paints to thicken but they will return to viscosity with warming temperature. Acetone and oil based paint will layer over time, they just need to be remixed. Never add acetone to any water based paint!

If you don't want to store the excess mix, call me I'll pick it up ... Lol

Again, thanks for all the help.

Another question. How much paint does it take? I know it depends on what type of container (size wise). I am thinking a plastic tub just big enough to lay a 330 in, and do footholds. Couple dozen of each. 3 gallons? 4?
