I just passed on some multi year dead ones on a hill side for just that reason , they seem solid enough but it is very steep where they stand , even if flat a few yards above and below

but just too many mushrooms to make me confident in the holding wood and to much weight were I don't want it.

Looks like a cottonwood. Those things are notorious for being rotten inside like that. A guy never knows what you will with them. Glad all went well.

Glad you're still able to run. I had to quit falling trees a couple years ago. Being in your 70s it ain't smart to try and out run a falling tree. I miss those days.....

There's a lot of bad youtube tree content that I believe has lead to some bad outcomes for people. I don't like to post as a lot of what we do shouldn't be emulated without understanding the risk and having ample experience.
