Don't know that market but if I had to guess I'd say because of the end use. Black walnut goes into boards for furniture and cabinetry vs fiber for pulp or chips for engineered lumber. Down here in the pine belt we sell by the ton as the bulk of it is either pulp or chip and saw. Used to be two ways pulp by the cord and everything else, saw logs, by mbf. Now everything gets run across the scale. Pulp would be bucked in the woods to four foot pieces. Pole still gets it's own price structuring. Saw log goes by the ton.
