There was a post on one of my Facebook groups that is pretty much talks and discussions about things in our general area.. The question asked what was the strangest thing that you ever had happen in your life? Mine , without a doubt was the lug nut incident… I’ll never understand that craziness.
I kinda figured this might make an interesting thread here,,, what is the strangest thing you guys ever had,,

Camping in the middle of nowhere in the south-central Utah desert. Light way up in the sky moving slowly, much like a satellite and at the same distance. Came straight down incredibly fast and MUCH closer, maybe 500 or 1000 feet up, pretty close to over me. Stopped moving for 5 seconds or so, then shot straight back up to where it was up in space and continued it's slow path like a satellite. Something I will never forget.

Reminds me of a time I saw a bunch of lights, like satellites, but moving faster and they were closer to earth. They kept turning off and back on, and one did a 180 loop-de-loop and went back the way it came. Another strange thing was once my mom and I stayed up late at night and watched dozens of shooting stars. That was cool. We tried looking it up the next day, to see what it was, like if it was a meteor shower or something but there was nothing about it online

Same with the ocean, from what I hear.

The lights in the sky stories spurred me to share this one. Probably around 2002 or so, got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Bedroom window on the second floor kind of had a lacey curtain on it, so light could easily pass through it. There's a cow pasture about 200 yards from the house with a small tree line that runs along with the fence line. I noticed something bright through the curtain, and there was a large cone shaped light with an even brighter beam of light within the duller cone. This was just on the other side of the trees, on the pasture side of the fence. It was there for maybe 5 seconds and then just disappeared in a snap. It wasn't moving.. just stationary. Didn't notice anything above that the light could be coming from. This is in a time well before large recreational drones. There was no mutilated cattle in the pasture (sarcasm), and I don't really believe in extra terrestrials. There's nothing of interest out where I live in a cow pasture, but if I was going to pin the most logical explanation on what it was, I guess I would say a helicopter shining down into a random cow pasture in a very low residential area in the middle of the night for some unknown reason..

I was fishing with a spinner in a small lake. It was shallow close to shore and I sometimes bumped bottom at the end of my retrieve. One cast it bumped bottom and when I got it in it had a small unused zip tie on one of the trebles. I thought - what are the odds of that hook hitting that tiny hole in the end of the zip tie. About 5 minutes later, I caught one the same way! And if that's not crazy enough - I caught another on the very next cast!! If Utah had a lottery I would have bought a bunch of tickets when I got home that day. Strange.

Here's another strange one. I was headed to Hole In The Rock, about 60 south of Escalante Utah. (This is where pioneers chopped, blasted and built a wagon trail down a steep sandstone crack into Glen Canyon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIdtNfMaMOs&t=401s). About 50 miles into the 60 mile drive through the desert, the dirt road goes up over the top of a sandstone hill. I stopped to stretch and walked around on this sandstone hill. Not too far off was a round house-sized hole with vertical walls - probably 15 feet deep. Down in the hole was a tent and about a thirty year old man sitting on a lawn chair. There was no ladder and no way he could get out of that hole. And I hadn't seen a vehicle for 20-30 miles. I about scared the stuffing out of him when I called down to ask if he was okay. He said he was fine and had everything he needed! I asked how he got down there. He explained he had some friends put him down there because he was trying to get off drugs and they would come back for him. Talk about cold-turkey (and hot and dry turkey)!
United we stand.

I was fishing at a favorite spot for cat, when I reeled in to check my bait I snagged a coil spring type rod holder, I had lost there about a year before!

I wanna hear the lug nut story! LOL I had a tire shred on me on one of those middle of nowhere country roads.. I was loosening the lug nuts and I had one roll into the ditch right smack dab into a crawdad hole… I went ahead and replaced the tire, then got a spade out of the truck and started digging up the crawdad hole to get the lugnut… I found a lugnut alright, but it wasn’t mine,, it was huge,, like one off a heavy duty truck or a tractor…I never did find the original nut.

Back a good 15 years ago I lived just north of the snake river state forest, at that time I had three dogs a mutt, a female Gordon setter and a big old walker coon hound, one night I was up late, couldn’t sleep so was up late watching the tv and the dogs wanted to go out so I let them, about a half hour or later they stared raising a ruckes and almost ripped the door down trying to get in, when I opened the door all three of them almost knocked me down getting in the house, all scared half to death even Charlie my old hound who I didn’t think anything could scare but he was terrified, outside when I look there was a round object hanging over the forest, no noise just hanging there, looked about the size of a baseball at whatever distance it was, at first I thought it was maybe a chopper which we sometimes had come through but I couldn’t hear a thing, absolutely nothing, that’s when I realized there was nothing at all making a sound not even the mosquitos and they were really bad that year and never quite, anybody that lives where there’s a lot of the little blood suckers knows what I mean
The whole night was silent the mating frogs, the mosquitos everything, that glowing ball whatever it was hung there for a while maybe 4/5 minutes and then just vanished and after a few more the noise all started up again the frogs the mosquitos everything, don’t know what it was but it sure scared my dogs and just about everything else in the area
I later heard that there was a rash of lights seen over the towns of Grantsburg and Danbury Wisconsin, not all that far away this was way before drones were ever a thing, like I said I still don’t know what it was or ever seen anything like it since but it was definitely something strange

Had a horrific horse accident when I was 13 back in my hay burner days. Horse threw me off at 30mph into a stone post. We have those out here because there were no trees back in the day. Broke back, dislocated left hip and severe head trauma. I was out for a bit before I was able to start crawling towards the house. When I was out a voice told me “Don’t be afraid you will be here until you’re 50”. I’ve lived my life accordingly and turned 50 this year. Only my wife knows that story until now.

No ET stories of my own but this was odd. I had a coonhound that would always lose her collars. I put them on loose, as I was always afraid of her getting hung up and not being able to get out, so not surprising she would lose them. Anyways, one day she came home collarless. This wasn't the first time, so I happened to have a spare on hand. I put that one on her. About a week later, she lost it too. At that point, I said screw it (besides, I was out of spare collars) and left her without one on. Two days later she walks up to me wearing a collar. I immediately asked my husband if he had put a collar on her, and he said no, which I figured as I knew we didn't have any. My next thought was someone had tried to steal her and put a collar of their own on her, so I called her over for a closer look. Then I really got a shock. There was a name tag on the collar with my name and number on it! It was one of my collars. I had no idea what to think. I knew my husband didn't do it and there was no one else around that could have.
The mystery was solved a few weeks later. I was walking through a remote corner of our yard one day when something shiny caught my eye glinting in the sun. I walked closer and came to a hole in the ground.... about woodchuck size hole. About 6" down inside this hole, standing upright (picture a hung snare) was a dog collar. The sun was hitting the buckle just right to make it shine. Apparently, the other collar had been in a hole in just the same manner, and she stuck her uncollared head down that hole and pulled it back out with the collar on! What are the chances of that happening???
Proudly banned from the NTA.
Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Ya the funny thing is that I didn’t get spooked till later when what went on really hit me at the time I was just shocked that Charlie my hound was scared, I once had to hole him back when he wanted to go after a pack of wolves when they came out at us when we were camping up north, but this scared him To this day I would really like to know just what was going on or hear a good explanation that makes sense, most just tell me it was probably just a chopper that was to far away for me to hear but the dogs still could but those came over regularly and even when they passed literally overhead never even got them to do more then glance at them, that mutt was scared of her own shadow and would even go out without me or one of the other dogs but Charlie this scared him, up to them I though he would charge the devil himself given the chance just for the thrill of the fight Dang it’s been to many years and I still miss him, was the smartest dog I ever meet or heard of

This takes a little explanation about logging in the NW. Yarders have whistles that the crew uses to signal the yarder engineer what to do, like one short for stop and three shorts to go ahead on the mainline. There are also whistles to notify everyone within hearing like three longs to alert the hooktender he is needed or 7 longs that someone is injured. One signal that is kind of obsolete is 4 longs to call for the climber. My father had been a climber for many years before he retired. The job became obsolete in the 70s when spar trees stopped being used. My dad died in 2014, and we had a graveside service. A number of people spoke and just after the last person spoke, a long way off in the hills there were four long whistles. Never heard another whistle that day. It was as if he was being called. A yarder whistle can't be confused with a truck horn or train. I know most in the crowd never recognized the significance, but I was a logger, so it hit home with me.

Goosebumps, in a good way. That's a special moment.

my father died in 2001.
a few days after his funeral, I got a phone call...but no one was on the other end. I thought it odd, as that hadn't happened for many years.
a day later...another such call.
two days later, it happened again.
now, I'm getting annoyed. I determined to stay on the line the next time (instead of just hanging up) to see what the other person would do.
when it did, I listened for any clues as to who was screwing with me. I listened HARD!
eventually, I thought I could EVER SO FAINTLY hear a man's voice on the other end. But try as I might, I couldn't make out what was being said. It sounded like the voice was a million miles away.
to this day, I have no idea why (other than pure exasperation) I did it, but I suddenly blurted out "Dad, if that's you, I can't hear what you're saying. We love you and we miss you."
I haven't gotten another such call since.
