Rather simple.

That is incorrect. As Dirty D mentioned, surfaced (4S)1” thick treated boards are sold as 5/4”. So are 1” white pine boards in some of the box stores.

Eh...wot?

Depends on the State. In Ct. a cord advertised is 128 cubic ft. In NY it’s a stack 4x8 ft that you “face”.
State State State.

I would probably say anything x6. either 5/4 or 1x being most popular around here.

Yeah, you really want to upset a lumber man shown up with a micrometer and mention 5/4 is 1.25, they really don’t like that. grin

1x6x16's have a good market for fence boards in horse country, however clear whiteoak has a market for the furniture industry and is more valuable, what to saw out of your logs, depends mainly on the quality of each log.
my boss just recently sold some whiteoak for 1.10 pbf on the stump for a company needing staves for whisky barrels.

Whenever I go to buy boards at the saw mill or deal with sawyers I never talk in quarters.
a 1 1/4 board is always 1 1/4, I never will say 5 quarters.

I have been "corrected" by some, after I say 1 1/4 they'll say 5 quarters. I look at them and again say 1 1/4.
After that they give up. Sometimes they will end up saying 1 1/4.

Its my small part to make the world a better place.

White oak is hot and has been for years in the cabinet business. I’m paying 12 something for 4/4 for and 14 for 8/4. The barrel factories use white oak but the furniture market uses a handful of oak species such as chesnut oak and sells it as white oak.

Yup, little known fact that "white oak" can actually be one of several different oaks from the white oak group. Post, Basket, Swamp Chestnut, White, Burr, Overcup and several others are all in the white group and sold as such. For most purposes they are interchangeble but for finer finished products where visible traits are important the craftsman may be more selective.

Same for the red oaks. We send a good bit of water oak to the mills as red oak even though it ain't fit for finish work red oak. It's pallet wood.
