Never been held up by hornets but they seem thick this year been splitting and stacking wood this year they are everywhere. Pulled the splitter out of the taller grass a got stung in the elbow they had been buzzing me but I brushed them off unknowingly thinking it was just the tall grass. Started to work on a pile away from that area but still got buzzed and killed several around the splitter. Might be the vibration of the motor running.
I split and stacked a couple good piles of wood earlier this year they seem to of moved into both piles on each side of where the splitter was parked lots of activity. I didn't want to spray that’s my milkweed area so spraying is not an option, I’ll wait for freeze up to work in that area I’ll chip away at the opposite end of the pile until it gets to be a problem again.
Did some research on them they say the workers are active at night I didn’t know that I thought that was a safe time to look around a bit.

They will be drawn to a light at night. They will find every hole in a bee suit.

If they are meat eaters like yellow jackets it's easy to kill off the whole colony. Mix some Fipronil in a can of tunafish and stick it in a cage trap so pets can't get to it. I do it once or twice a summer when they show up and they are all gone in a day or two.
How Fipronil-based Wasp Control Works Baiting: Fipronil is mixed into a bait, such as canned whitefish or chicken, which is placed in a safe, specialized station. Foraging: Wasps are attracted to the bait and consume it. Secondary Transfer: The fipronil is transferred from the treated foragers to the untreated nestmates. Colony Elimination: The poison ultimately reaches and kills the queen, leading to the collapse of the entire nest.
United we stand.

yup on Figronil, couple days no wasps, bees wont bother. OR you can spray wood pile with permethrin and any wasp even landing on wood will die. Permethrin WILL NOT bother plants. In fact permethrin breaks down after a couple weeks.

These are paper wasps or mud dabbers the orange and black ones with one group in each wood pile from what I can see from their movements. I took 3/4 of the one pile away today and never seen any. Yesterday pulling the splitter out of the tall grass between the wood piles really seemed to upset them they buzzed me 15 feet away from their nest areas.
I’ll wait for it to freeze then fetch the rest of that pile

There was a thread a week or so ago on irradiating them. Cant remember the recipe.. I think you mean "Irradicating" them! As I understand it, Hornets/Bee's etc, are drawn to the CO2 in your breath, and maybe in the motor EXAUST.

They are bad here this year. I've killed two big ground bee nest (yellow jackets I think) already but there must be another nearby.
I was stacking a pile of split firewood last evening and came across a severed, crushed mouse's head. What a way to go. LOL
Eh...wot?

Last year when we hunted elk the aspen trees were covered in some kind of bee or bee looking hornet spent most of our lunch time chasing them away from our sandwiches trying to eat. You could hear them buzzing I walked over to younger tree and the leaves were covered with the bee looking things. Not overly aggressive but always present it looked like they might of been gathering some dust/pollen off of the leaves it was weird.

Neighbor got walloped by them pretty good this weekend filling the silo. They are nasty this time of year for sure. I almost think the heat and dryness we've had is making them meaner. Wait’ll they get a load a’ me…..
