We were going to eat coyote once and my friend Chad vetoed it when he said "Friends don't let friends eat coyote."
We have a party once a year where we eat something at least most of us haven't eaten. We've been doing it for around 20 years. I've eaten beaver, muskrat, raccoon, squirrel, groundhog, rabbit, venison, elk, goat, bison, camel, alpaca, kangaroo, partridge, pheasant, quail, guineafowl, geese, ducks, pigeon, doves, iguana, rattlesnake, python, alligator, snapping turtle, squid, octopus, cuttlefish, lots of species of crabs, lots of species of shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels, abalone, crayfish, lobster, scorpion, lots of species of fish.
It's getting harder to find readily available, new animals to try. We are going to try bobcat this year from Mississippi.
I wouldn't want to eat domestic dog or any primates. I can't think of any other vertebrates I wouldn't try.

I ate otter jerky. It was definitely the worst, strongest flavor jerky I've had. Once got paid $60 to eat a 3" long wood beetle. Easiest $60 I ever made.

Yes i shot one once and cut some steaks off the hind quarters. It wasn't terrible even got my wife to try a piece of it. Grandma used to bake coons and they were good just lots of fat. Cooked otter a couple times and was tough but my daughters liked it. I have eaten dog twice while down in AZ and multiple species of cats and they were all pretty decent. Still a few critters I haven't tried and a few I probably won't.

I knew a guy who would call coyotes and he would eat younger females he shot.
he was also stationed in Korea for a while in his younger life.
he has been dead several years , but it was pancreatic cancer and not coyote that got him.

I watched that one too and it's pretty crazy. I don't think I could eat yote. If someone paid me I would, but other than that no way.

Keith Bobcat is really good deep fried. I eat everyone that I catch.

Woodchuck is also very good It was the back straps and hind leg off one of our catches. She's into trying strange foods with me. I didn't do the fox justice, just parboiled and browned it. We agreed that we'll try it again this season and I'll pressure cook it and add some flavoring.

I’ve eaten a lot of stuff but I draw the line a k9, cats or really any type of carnivore. I have eaten raccoon and possum as a kid but even that I wouldn’t eat now unless I was in a survival situation.

Ate dog in VN, with the Yards, another time on Camachee Reservation. Not saying I wouldn't eat it ,but I'd have to be very hungry. Had some fellows, years ago that had a cabin, every Thursday evening, they had wild game cook. Turkey, deer, duck, etc. Asked me about otter, was chasing them hard. Skinned young 1, cleaned it up for them, as everyone knows, otters have desticnt smell, thought nothing about it I advised soak in water ,until time to cook. Talked to them few days later, asked how was otter, was told after less than 20 minutes, in oven, out in the yard it went, smelled real bad.

As a kid first time I had coon it was greasy and salty and disgusting. Then years later I learned my mom late would cook it by par coiling it to remove as much fat and gamy flavor and then cook it in the over with bbq sauce like pulled pork and we never knew we were eating coon.
Where it is caught makes a difference. City animals eating garbage I would never touch. Most of the possum around here are city possum so no thanks to them also. Porcupine is supposed to be very good and was common fare for native Americans. They are slow and lumbering so they could be easily clubbed, flipped over and handled by the feet. Another meat I have never tried is skunk, although if you do a clean job removing the glands they can be smell free and have very clean looking/smelling red meat. Beaver I would tend to use for jerky or potpie as with the lack of fat in the meat I found eating beaver that has been cooked in the pan is like stone hitting my stomach when I swallow it.

Probably the best I've ate is mountain lion. And rattle snake being the toughest meat I've ate I guess it's all in the preparation. I've had rattlesnake. One of the guys at camp killed a 52" black timber rattler at camp years ago and the camp cook made a meal out of it. It was good, light colored meat that wasn't tough at all.

Fact is that muskrats are also meat eaters. Those empty clam shells didn't get that way from coon. In fact, a hind leg off a rat at a muskrat set will catch you some rats.

As for eating grinners I saw where a dead and bloating cow was in a field. Guess what when I kicked that cow 5 grinners came running out. Same with a coyote I had caught and killed. It was badly rubbed so I tossed it. You know what I'm going to say yes, a grinner was living in that carcass.

Actually, rats can be cannibalistic. And you would be correct some of those empty clam shells could be from both coon and otter, but rats also feed on those clams.

They do. When I lived in IL, before we had any otter to speak of.... I trapped a farm pond that was full of rats. The banks of that pond were just littered with clam shells. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/10/full-20923-270750-muskrat.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/10/full-20923-270751-screenshot_2025_10_05_124343.png)

The most exotic thing I eat was zebra. I didn't know what it was at the time but it wasn't terrible. Oddly enough, even though I didn't seek it out or anything , I've found myself in a lot of situations where equine was on the menu . From a volunteer fire department that was roasting a whole donkey for a fundraiser to horse sashimi in Japan, from horse cold cuts in Kyrgyzstan to a stew in Turkey. I love horse meat. Here , during the rattlesnake festivals in the spring, there's always a tent frying up rattlesnake. If any of you are with me and mention getting some , I'd discourage it aside from the curiosity aspect . But we can wrap a handful of toothpicks with a piece of shaved chicken breast , batter and deep fry it at home. Same thing.
Honor a Soldier. Be the kind of American worth fighting for.
