When my kids were young, I planted oats and rye grass. I do have a buddy that plants a garden for his deer! Turnips, corn , oats and beans! He kills nice deer every year!! It says a lot for down here!

I tried oats once. Awesome results. Deer would run full speed across a pasture to get to the oats.

Plant oats to be 6" about for your early seasons, but they will freeze out, buck forage oats hang on longer, Rye will stay green and continue to grow anytime above freezing.

Farmers here plant a lot of rye as a cover crop in the fall, but I don't see much, or any, deer activity on it. Geese seem to prefer wheat instead of rye also..here...

40 lbs oats, 30 lbs wheat, 30 lbs cereal rye. A lb or 2 of red clover and purple top turnips per acre. The deer eat it all

Bob oats are cheap, easy to plant, and easy to get up. They can be drilled in or broadcasted on a rough disked field and still come up.

If one is dealing with a lot deer, they will keep them cropped off nearly indefinitely. If not so many deer, then eventually, they mature and the deer will avoid them. They relish them when they are young and tender and growing. Keeping them cropped off, but not killing them prolongs their success as for as deer

I Think I saw some at tractor supply, but don't hold me to it, might want to call there...

I did some digging once into BFO, seems they were a variety of commercial forage oats, grown for....forage, lol, instead of grain. Forgot the name, or it might have been a numbered cultivar... try the co'op maybe they can look it up for you, BFO's come at a premium, sold to deer hunters, but for small amounts probably doesn't matter.

I plant them in a 3 way mix. Buck Forage oats, a brassica ( daikon radish, kale, or turnip ) and clover ( Frosty Berseem Clover ). Great mix, deer are hammering the plots. Chicory is also a good option.

But to answer your question, yes I plant oats. I’ve found over the years that the extra money spent on BFO is worth it.

I planted oats., Because the winter will kill them with hard freeze. Rye would need to be sprayed. Of course I am planting field edges where we plant corn and beans for a cash crop. But the deer really like the green stuff after a few lite frosts.

Oats if you want it to Winter kill after a couple of hard frosts. Winter Wheat or Cereal Rye if you want it to last until Spring, when you can chemically terminate it or let mature.
