When to get them fixed or even if you need to?

Ask a Doc!!!!! An hernia can get "strangulated", that means a loop of gut pokes thru the torn muscle, and get's pinched off, and that section can die, causing YOU'RE death. Not something you want to screw with.

Wow!!!

I’ve had mine for 40 years, know exactly when it happened. Wonder why my doctors never freaked out over it. Every one of them have been aware of it. Even my current doc mentioned it but did seem real concerned. She is send into me for a CT scan later this month. Now y’all got me freaking out. shocked

Guess I’ll see what they have to say.

It mostly depends on location, size and if the hernias are likely to tear further. If your CT Scan is in a month, it's likely your doctor isn't very concerned about it. If they thought it was a major issue, they would have it checked out immediately because they don't want to be sued if strangulation or incarceration occurs.

Same here. I've had an umbilical hernia for around forty years, probably longer. It's gotten slightly larger in the last four decades. My doctors are aware of it but don't seem very concerned about it.

Eh...wot?

Had 4, they'll let you know when. Screen put in 2X. Good news is that was over 35 years ago and no problems since. Everything is usually done arthroscopically now.

Had an inguinal hernia for quite a while. Always had to hold myself when I coughed or sneezed. Started burning worse and got it fixed. No big deal.

I found out for sure when I got out of the shower one day,I thought I had a tumor. My wife looked at it and told me I had a hernia.I hate doctors and hospitals,so I always said I get it taken care,I said that for about 4 years.I woke up one morning and my right side felt different, now it was huge.I got a appointment and got it taken care of .The doctor told me afterwards I had a 21/2" or 3 1/2" tear,I forget which, but was big.

I have had two , both sides of the groin. 1’st was a cute doctor and the turn your head a caugh thing. She wouldn’t give me my medical card for my cdl till it was fixed. Asked her to check again but didn’t work. That one got fixed the old way, cut a 3”- 4” inch slice. Second was done with just a couple small holes around the belly. That was definitely a faster heal. On both I was back to hauling trash within a week or so. Most guys took 6 weeks off. I could not take it. My house got painted gutters cleaned, lawn mowed. Then the doctor said no more pain killers. You might fall off the roof.

I've had 3 hernias fixed , 2 umbilical and one when the Dr removed my feeding tube after my cancer treatments this one was close to the size of a hockey puck after I rolled over in bed while stretching early one morning it hurt like no other !

The 2 umbilical hernias I put off doing anything about them , then allot a sudden they were larger than they were before , I made a mistake of grocery shopping and just bought a few little things nothing overly heavy , I was doing good until I got to the steps leading to the front door them I felt that twinge and knew I didn't need to be doing this .

And a friend seen it all and was sitting within ear shot when I checked in with my surgeon and she ratted me out so the Dr said you take another 4 weeks off nothing but easy duty !

My best advice is if you ever start lifting weights never ever stop lifting and working out ! Keeping toned is plenty good enough .

You're friend along the snare line .

I just had a hernia fixed this February. I had a small bump on my lower belly and sort of knew it was a hernia. Had a sonogram confirm it and then had it fixed. They cut three holes, each less than an inch wide, one in my belly button and one on each side of it. Everything seems to have healed up nicely.

Don't cough, laugh or move for the first three days.

I had one a few years ago, talked to my son about it. He told me he had an aunt die from one on his other side of family. I told him I would get it fixed. Unfortunately, it was at the beginning of trapping season. Healed up in 2 weeks and hit the river right after the doctor gave me clearance. Wife wasn't happy about it but I wasn't losing my whole season.

Pretty sure there are different "levels" of hernias

Think the CT scan I had showed a small one

Pretty sure hernia is a tear and not necessarily accompanied by any protrusion of bowel but I would have to ask.

Had a young lady that I knew, but not real well, pull me aside at a party.
Said she wanted to.show me something, and led me into an unoccupied room and closed locked the door!!!

Pulled her sweater up a little, popped her jeans button, and slid them down a little!!!

And there, was a fairly large, squishy bump, that she started poking in and out with her finger.

" Uh, i think that's a hernia, better get it looked at".
" That's what I thought, thanks!"

LOL, she's a veterinarian now.

Had an umbilical hernia for years, one doc said it will heal and go away...it didn't, I could poke it back but it was starting to bother me lifting stuff. Finally had it fixed, different doc, lol,
He said I could go to work the next day....I couldn't....

Every laugh, cough, fart, or movement was extremely painful, took almost a week to heal up...
frown

So the lesson to this story is, you probably need it fixed, and, not all doctors tell the truth!,,, grin

LOL grin

An untreated hernia led to my grandfather's death... it wasn't the hernia itself that killed him, but rather the pain from it. It had been very bad for several years, but he refused to get it fixed, I think mainly because he did most of the work around the house for my grandmother at that point, and he didn't want to be laid up and unable to. One day he complained of how badly it was hurting and said he needed to lay down for a while... shortly after laying down his heart gave out (he'd had zero previous heart problems) and he died before the ambulance got there. frown

A few years later my mom had one. She went to the Doc not realizing what the bulge below her belly was. The Doc told her it was a good thing she did because if she hadn't she'd have been dead within 24 hours... not sure exactly what the details with that one was... but they fixed it up and she's been fine ever since.

Go get it fixed, Hobbie. Not something to mess around with.
