I’m a big fan of Caven’s Gusto, it’s my go to fisher lure here in Pa. But I can’t understand how every unopened sealed bottle of Gusto can smell so strong. I bought some the other day at a trap shop, hauled it home. The inside of the Subaru still smells like a skunk. How do trapping supply houses mail this stuff out? How does the smell get out of the bottle?

My barn always smells like skunk. A very little in the air sticks like glue. And lasts a while. Its the nature of the beast. I've mailed bottles of quill with the cap dipped in wax. Wrapped in bubble wrap. And vacuum sealed. Always smells.

I believe last time I had Gusto shipped it came in a some kind of special mylar/poly bag inside another bag inside the shipping box.

When I go to conventions I bring a paint can filled with peat moss. Anything skunk gets put in sealed freezer bags before being buried in the peat moss in the sealed paint can. And then carried outside the vehicle on the cargo carrier. I made a mistake once coming from home from Wyoming, never again. Christine has developed a few special names for smelly stuff at trapper conventions, lol.

It sounds to me like your Gusto took on the smell of the Lesbaru.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I have mentioned it here several times over the years. Best way I found to keep stinky lures is in a good metal paint can. Even then once the genie is out of the bottle as they say. It can be hard to ever get completely rid of the smells. I have handle lots of skunks and essence in my garage. Im as careful as I can be about keeping essence off of anything. All bottles and things I use to handle skunks are kept in paint cans or tools in sealed bucket. I haven't handled only a few skunks last couple years. Yet my garage holds that faint smell of skunk
Seem more pronounced on days when it rains or its humid.
Anyways try keep your Gusto in a paint can thats where my bottle is. When not on the line.
Make sure the can is warm when you close it up. As it will get stored where you put it. Then like when you can something it will seal the lid better as it cools and not push when warms back up.
Hope this helps.

Mac

I use a metal ammo can with the rubber seal. I have a piece of foam cut out to fit the bottles and then another to fit over the top of the bottle. Then pin the throttle to 50 mph on your sno-go and don't worry about breaking a 4 ounce bottle of Gusto. None of them will break and you can store it in the garage without problems.

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

Best hunting and trapping vehicle out there….Subaru Forester. 30+ mpg 9.5 “ ground clearance , all wheel drive. And half the price of a truck.

Hahaha. Just giving you a hard time. My college roommate had one in the early 80's and we abused the heck out of that thing. He took it places that would make most pickups go pale.

Vacuum sealed bags hold the odor in. Ive sent skunky lure home with guys in the car with their wives. And the wives didnt mind one bit. My PO ladies were very happy when I bought a vacuum sealer. The secret is be real careful you dont get any skunk on the outside of bag. Which means no skunk of the outside of container and no skunk on your hands.
