When I started trapping decades ago I used what ever I could get a hold of. When we butchered deer is was able to get a small container full and that's what used. It worked, don't know if was great success but I did catch a few.

Mr Hunter8282 if you can get your hands on some muskrat carcasses and put a lite taint to them i think you will be happy with the results that you get

Ive tested a bunch of different raw meats and by products to guage their attraction. Deer is definitely up there towards the top but none of them come close to the attraction of a good prepared bait on a one to one bases. With that said there are times and places for a natural bait. The advantage of a natural bait often is in the amount used which is usually a significantly higher amount. A larger amount of something with a moderate amount of attraction can sometimes get close to a small amount of something that is more attractive.

You Betcha’ !

Fresh venison is one of the most effective attractants there is.
I would use it over the commercial stuff all day long.
You might consider grinding fresh then add SB immediately.
In needs no enhancement to kill coyotes in numbers.

The DDH was my best producing hole set by far.
That combo will stack up coyotes in a hurry.

I didn't have a huge amount of success with it, although I caught a couple and to be fair I use very few baited sets so I didnt give it a thorough testing. I did have several cases where there were tracks going by a couple feet away without breaking stride. I would choose it over about any other straight meat bait though, with the exception of beaver and muskrat. One bait piles those are the first three things always eaten.

As Texas says, I would grind it and preserve it either immediately or with a light taint. I would also add glycerin with you being in Michigan, it will keep it from freezing and it puts out more smell when it isn't frozen. Glycerin also keeps it from Drying out nearly so fast in dry weather. It doesn't add any attraction in and of itself, but keeping your bait unthawed and damp makes it more attractive.

I use chunked deer in 3" d/holes, I try to get them 18" deep
I keep my chunks in glycerin because I trap January - February
I fill the hole with about 6" of chunks and put a pre cut piece of deer hide on top of that as a plug that needs forced into the hole
I'll add a few more chunks on top of the plug.

The only bait I found better is porkypine

I prefer Deer Dust to Deer chunks.
I like a pasty bait vs. chunks. With chunks, a Canine can hook chunk with toenail and pull from dirthole. Deer Dust smeared in dirthole is hard to get a morsel.

Deer Dust-
It's the stuff left from the butcher's bandsaw that Deer processor throws away. It's like saw dust to a wood saw.
Deer Dust is Bone, Fat & Meat that is very fine. Can be enhanced with additives, made freeze proof, easily made pasty, no grinding, no chopping, no mess.
Ask your local Deer Processor to save you gallons. My processor gives it to me for FREE. Free bait, heck yea!

Hern has a great idea that can be incorporated into homemade bait.
Fresh bone meal & marrow is a great addition to any meat.
He is right on target with chunk v paste/grind as well.
A coyote can snag those chunks with no problem.

I grind bait for two primary reasons.
One is to insure the SB penetrates the meat as quickly as possible.
The SB cannot stop the meat quickly when left in chunks.
The other is a fine grind is much more versatile in terms of application.

This bait works better due to its freshness & the fact that it's a favorite of Mr. Wile E.

I agree fresh is best.
I should have stated above that is a long-term set
I use more ground up liver with deer blood through out the season in a punch hole under a tuft of grass

Herns dust is a very good bait

If my bait starts to get a taint smell and it's not deer season
I just look for a fresh roadkill
