So they are considered furbearers in PA but you can’t trap them, only hunt them. I understand the meat is very good. Has anyone ever caught one in a trap? Cage trap or foothold trap doesn’t matter. Is it different in other states? Just a curiosity

My buddy shot two a few years ago during the season. We were going to cook them up. The general consensus among Tman members was that porcupine is not very good to eat. I forgot about them and they got freezer-burned.

Eh...wot?

Never eat one but easy to catch. I find where they den up at and that is easy because of their dropping and the unique smell. I use foot hold and one of the easiest critters to trap.

Protected here in NJ. You want to have fun try releasing one from a snare!!
Ate some once, tasted not much like pork but a lot like pine...

I've footholded quite a few using a salted post for a bait. Every one I've cut open to clean has been so full of parasites that I've elected not to eat them.

If you approach them from downwind you will wonder who built a hog confinement building in your neighborhood. The smell alone is enough to make me take a pass on eating one of them.

I always thought they smell like bad human body odor. We had a buddy in highschool that we called "Quill Pig". Smelled just like a porky.

I have nothing clever to put here.

And T-111 siding. I have a picture of a camp from a few years ago where the siding from the ground up about 2 feet is completely gone, eaten by porcupines.

You need to find a contractor that moves a little faster then.

It wasn’t my camp, it was an abandoned shack a couple of miles from my place.

They have occasionally gnawed on the T-111 on my carport though.

I have ate them. Cut into bite size pieces and deep fried. I liked the taste. Not the skinning though. Smell is bad when you skin one but the smell is all hide not meat.
