Just got him on camera last night and this morning. Small spike.
How rare are they? First one I've ever scene. He's still at the feeder as I type this.

Would you take him? Chances of becoming a nice buck where I hunt is slim to none. Coyotes are an issue, plus the neighbors will shoot anything.

About 20 years ago when I was living in central Iowa there was a herd of deer that were heavily piebald living outside of town about 6 -8 miles. There was probably 150 deer in this herd.

The state put on a special hunt to remove every last one of the piebald deer.
There was every bit of 60 hunters involved, unfortunately I wasn't one of them.
But it was definitely a sight to them be driven out of the draws and tall CRP.
They did it for two weekends. There wasn't a piebald deer to be seen after that.

I asked the biologist why they were killing them off. He said that they were a genetic defect and they didn't want them in the gene pool.

Yep, their chances to live long aren't good. I've read less then 2% become piebald. Mom and dad has to have the gene to pass it on.
If.given the chance. I will probably take it and have a rug made. Also, here in SC. They want them gone, so no restrictions.
Also read, mom sometimes rejects them due to the oddity. And they have some health issues.

Had a fawn near town about ten years ago. Our local GW and I watched him/her for months from a distance. Eve a sighting again after that winter. Kept an eye on that area for years.. only one I’ve heard of let alone seen in these parts. Cool looking critter for sure!

Wow, both the piebald and the bucks in the bottom pic are super cool! We have a piebald doe that hangs around here, but she has less white on her. I had a chance to shoot her last year but I didn't. Apparently she has been around for a long time, and nobody's killed her yet so I guess she'll just be here til she dies of old age. Thanks for sharing

Back in the 1970s, my uncle David shot a piebald deer on one of the military bases, where they harvested a bunch of overpopulated deer for a study where they tested how quickly the deer cooled over time, so that game wardens could tell if deer were shot before season or at night. He tanned the hide on top of my grandparents, pop up camping trailer.

Now that’s a piebald. A lot of them just have a little white, but he’s really cool. The only way to ensure he isn’t gonna make it another year is to pull the trigger on him yourself. With that said, I wouldn’t fault you for doing it.

I don't think ide shoot it, I've passed up albino squirrels before. It's cooler seeing that stuff in the woods than on a wall to me. If you tan it it'll just look like a goat hide on the couch

Camera just sent a pic at 6:31. Whitety at 30 yards from stand. Hope it continues to hang in the area. Sure would be cool to see in person.
I haven't fully decided if I would shoot it. More interested in my 3 target bucks. Time will tell.

Big difference between an albino and a piebald. There are bad physical traits that can come with the genetics of piebalds. Short legs, misaligned jaws. arched spine, deformed hooves.
Not exactly the kind of traits I'd like to see in the deer that I hunt.

Predation is high on the list for them. He's definitely smaller then he should be. Would like to see it in good light.
Won't be back in the stand until next Thursday. Wind is totally wrong until then. Maybe he'll hang around until then.

have shot several of them, DNR encourages us to shoot them. the gene that allows them to have all or some white hair due to lack of skin pigment occurs in 1 in 267,000 deer, and both parents must have it, so unless that deers range contains 534,000 deer, chances are its inbred. I would shoot it!

Ridge Runner 1960, he's still hanging around. The other deer won't go near him. Just stare at him. They know he's different.
Hope to get a in-person look. Then I'll decide about putting a tag on it. His little knows aren't big enough to qualify as a.buck. So, I would use one of my many doe.tags and save them for the three other bucks I have my sights set on.
Thinks for the info. Piebalds interesting for sure.
