My middle daughter sent me some pictures of some cutting boards she found online and asked me if I could make them for her.

I told her I’d try to get them done by her birthday. I did, but just barely. LOL

I started by cutting a couple of pieces off some walnut boards I had gotten from a customer years ago.

I used a hand plane to flatten one side before running them through the power planer to final thickness.

The design.

Raising the grain with water before the final sanding.

A twelve-hour bath in food grade mineral oil.

I applied a topcoat of organic beeswax mixed with mineral oil and buffed them when it set up

Awesome lugnut.

How do you lay out your hand curves? Just draw by hand, or have a template or use French curves or something?

She sent me pictures of the boards she liked. I used them as models and used a compass and lots of measurements to lay out the curves. It was a lot of trial and error until I got them looking the way I wanted them to.

After I cut the boards out and got them just the way I wanted them, I used them as patterns to make templates out of quarter inch luaun so I won’t have to go through that process again.

Eh...wot?

A loaf of Sourdough... would look good on those cutting boards.

Nicely done

Nice work. I make some too for friends. I've never tried the soak in mineral oil but it would be better.

I like end grain boards but they are too heavy in large sizes.

Nice walnut too.

My daughters got it for me as a present several years ago when I started transitioning from general contracting to custom woodworking. I’m not sure where they got it.

I had my youngest working on a design and was planning on buying it myself when they surprised me with it.

My Daughter inlaw wanted a Chartreuse board so I made her this one. Never thought about a mineral oil bath. I have made many since I built her's.

Nice work, love walnut just got some custom doors made from it to contrast the ash trim throughout. Almost too nice to put a knife to but how's it hold up as a cutting board being on the softer side?

Walnut is my favorite wood to work with.

I don’t know how well it will hold up. I put a note in the box for my daughter that said,” This is as nice as these cutting boards are ever going to look, so take some pictures and start using them.”

They are just under an inch and a quarter thick. So if it becomes necessary at some point, they could be planed/resurfaced and reconditioned, and should look like new again.

Eh...wot?

Nice work, Lugnut. Is she an Apple employee? Just wondering after looking at the handle shape.

No, not an Apple employee. LOL

It was a design she found online and liked. The seller was asking 200-some dollars for a three board set.

My Wife and I just got back from a Farmers Market. And a guy was selling cutting boards and charcuterie boards and they weren't that nice. Cheapest was 155.00
