Just an FYI:

A Chinese company that sells on Amazon has recently came out with an RTS Setter knock off. Some of their listings even call it an RTS Setter.

To be sure you are getting an original RTS Setter, look for the white sticker with my phone # and email on it. As well as two gripping plates that the rod runs through. The genuine RTS Setter also comes in a plastic bag with two sided direction sheet. Look for sticker to be sure you’re ordering a genuine RTS Setter. Or better yet, order from any one of the trap supply dealers that sponsor pages on TRAPPERMAN. Every dealer that sponsors a page on T-MAN stocks the original RTS Setter.

There have been many knock offs of the RTS SETTER over the years. They have all gone by the wayside as I’m sure this latest one will. They all make the mistake by using a cheep Chinese caulk gun drive system. It always fails. The pressure is all transferred to the thumb piece on these regular caulk gun drives and it cannot handle the load. The rod starts sliding back after minimal use on trap springs. The cheap drives also have light weight rivets in handle rather than hardened steel pins. Handle is always sloppy requiring several more strokes due to all the slack.


Double gripping plates on RTS Setter (bottom)grab the rod in 4 places rather than 2. The plates also share the load with thumb piece when holding spring pressure.


This is how original RTS Setter should look when you receive it. Knock off is loose in box with no directions.

The funny thing is, the knock off is the same price as the original. They even copied price!! LOL

It is disgusting that China gets away with this. Your setter is great Shawn, my wife can set 330s with it. And its got me out of sprung traps!

I don’t actually sell the setter on Amazon Jayme. It’s a dealer of mine. He reported them but he said it’s a huge Chinese company and Amazon doesn’t want to tick them off so he’s getting the run around.

I actually bought one to check it out and left a review saying it was a cheap knock off. Amazon said they reviewed the purchase and I that received a genuine product so they wouldn’t post the review. LOL.

Could had used that today, caught my hand in a Besile 330.

Picked up a knife sharpener on FB before I went to MO went by the Wicked Sharp name. Nothing was real it was just a knock off of toy quality a total piece of junk its a pretty basic build but nothing was real about it. First the shipping address was a scammer address in Chicago, the tracking said it was coming from Austria and still in US customs the day it came. LOL They charged $13 state tax that should have been $2.50.

It arrived broken the abrasive surface fell off of the base then when I put it back in the box a tab broke in the blade holder slide just pure junk never ment to be used it’s the wrong type of plastic to last past the first use.

With all that crooked BS they pulled PayPal had me jumping through hoops I had to keep saying this ain’t rocket science folks who does business like this but a scammer.

With the exception of couple TideWe ground Blinds I bought for my elk hunting trip they were only thing that was a true bargain. PayPal keeps dragging their feet these crooks will be in the wind I see other sellers pushing the same garbage still on FB. So much for fact checkers.

I’d get on Amazon if you have the power to do so counterfeiting is probably more profitable than the original quality product the crooks fold their tents the reappear under another name with their governments blessing. I know some suppliers that went to Taiwan to do the exact same thing to copy others ideas.

Nothing China won’t copy look what a specialty product they copied here that’s by design.

Yeah, lot of mechanics say the copy parts and label them as oem. Even Motorcraft parts. If Ford can’t stop them I don’t have a chance lol. I really don’t think the knock off setter will last long on Amazon, it’s junk. People will be returning it and or leaving bad reviews.

I left them a review on Amazon. Probably won't allow it, but we'll see.

Love my RTS; got three of them. I refuse to use anything else.

Actually, thinking about it, one of your competitors probably contracted with china to make them, for sale here...

In this case its just a big Chinese company that searches Amazon for anything that sells 50 plus units a month then tries to copy it. According to the dealer selling the RTS Setter on Amazon anyway. Apparently they have copied several items he sells.

Haven't heard anything from Amazon, but I don't see the review on there either... lol, I tried.

I'm putting my original RTS setter to use next week. It has worked flawlessly for many years. I probably bought when it first came out.

Here’s a dumb question: was the original RTS patented? And if so, was the patent renewed, thus giving it more protection from copying?

I’m thinking of all the copies of the 330, all of the foot traps, body-grip setters, round point beaver skinning knives, etc. the originals are still great equipment, but there’s no way to protect from copying and the lower prices they come with.

I don’t think it’s a dumb question at all. That’s how it’s supposed to work. But the fact is, a Patent doesn’t slow China down much if any. Especially on Amazon. Plus, by changing to the cheap drive unit it’s different enough not to infringe.

One thing you might consider- if you have a registered trademark on your name, you can sign up for amazon brand registry and then amazon will not allow unauthorized sellers to use your trademark. They might still be able to sell them but they can not call them RTS (assuming that is your registered trademark)

Yeah, I should have registered the trade mark years ago but didn’t. I underestimated the interest in the setter. I thought everyone who needed one would have one within a couple years and sales would start to drop. That hasn’t been the case. We sell more every year. If I registered it now and file a claim with Amazon, if successful, they require you to re-list the item with new trade mark and you lose all the reviews.

Reviews are king on Amazon according to the dealer that’s selling the setter on there. That’s why I really appreciate the guys who left unfavorable reviews on the knock offs.

I’m not sure how many the Chinese sent on the first boat, but I doubt it’s going to be worth it for them to manufacture a second load.
