Well, the highest amount of snap users is a blue state. CA. TX is second... not sure what the deal is there? 3rd is Florida, but that makes sense as I believe they also have the most elderly folks living on SS.....

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

The reason those states have higher numbers of SNAP recipients is that's where higher numbers of people live.

The percentage of the population receiving benefits gives you a better idea. Nationally 12.3% of the population receives SNAP. In Texas, only 11.4% of the population receives SNAP. In California, 13.6 receive it. In New York 14.7.

This has impacted my family directly - the shutdown, not SNAP. That said - we were prepared. I have been employed by gov for over 20 years with different agencies. That said - I have no idea how any spending is occurring. There has been NO budget passed - for any agency. No CR passed for any agency. All fiscal year spending should have been wrapped up end of Sept. With no appropriations or fiscal bills being passed - there is NO money appropriated. I laughed yesterday when I saw a Federal judge rule the administration HAD to continue SNAP. How can one continue to spend with no money? Even paying the troops with "set aside" funds or re-allocating funds should all be examined by DOGE in my opinion. Nothing should be operating - there has been NO funding bills obligated or passed. Truly our country should be feeling the "burn" of nothing happening with federal govt. I am much more nervous now how anything is being "funded" without any legal appropriations or bills or CRs being pushed through - I hope someone else also questions this.....if anyone can please tell me what line item of any budget is being funded for current operations or to pay anyone with the govt currently - please tell me how one goes about budgeting and getting funds with NO appropriations. Faulty accounting. The SNAP allocation "emergency" fund would not even have paid all the applicants for a month.

I think you already know the answer Blackdog. Simply put, the federal government does whatever it wants because it can. No one is ever held accountable, and likely never will be.
Almost every day there is some sort of scandal exposed. Some congressman or senator will point it out and talk tough for the cameras for a day or two, and then it's forgotten. Nothing is ever done and likely never will be.

Money is not being allocated for spending, but the government is still collecting money. So the money exists. Probably still selling bonds too. ( and paying interest)

Of course, this only applies to the discretionary budget. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are on auto pay ( over 50 percent of Federal Spending)
