Was curious if anyone has run any conibears after buying them, degreasing them, but not painting or dying them or anything. Was in a hurry and bought some bodygrips last minute and just wanted to get them in sets after I degreased them

Don't see what it will hurt just to use them. You can treat them later.

I throw them in a creek for a day hang them outside and use. Obviously a proper coat of dye, paint or dip would work but use them now and treat them after season.

Out of the box and into the water for the first season then the dye pot before the next season. I wouldn't worry about degreasing.

Yes you can,set then right out of the box as long as you don't mind rust stained fur . Depending on how many Conibear traps you have you could rotate them and step wool the ones that were set and degreased so to speak then spray paint them weather permitting of course .

You're friend along the snare line .

I’d wash them in Dawn and warm water. Let them dry for a couple hours and then spray paint them with a quick drying paint. Then go set them. Rust stained fur will be found out and you’ll get docked pretty hard.

Never too old to learn

A little WD40 on a rag will sometimes help remove rust from fur. $12 Beaver, $30 otter, and $2 muskrat - - - I'm guessing the "hit" you would take on a hatter beaver wont be to terrible.
Cat, marten, and fisher might be different but you wouldn't be setting for those in the water.
Good Luck

Throw them in the dishwasher. They will come out perfect, and no, it won't ruin the dishwasher. Use regular dishwasher soap and run a regular cycle.
They will then be ready for whatever coating/treatment you desire. Rattle can spray paint will be cheap, fast and effective for a dozen traps or so, and they de-odor pretty quickly hung outside. Ready to set next day.
Un-treated traps, especially conibear type, will rust in no time at all.

Just doing what I want now.

I don't know that they'll fit IN the dishwasher, and if I throw them AT her, I'm liable to get slapped.

Seriously though, I've not had a lot of brand new conibear traps over the years, but those I have, I've used the first winter and then dyed them. Only thing I've ever had a problem with rust staining on was ermine, and I can't think of that from conibears, but I can recall having issues with it from footholds. Degreased Duke conibears that I got new, very quickly got a patina of surface rust, on the other hand I degreased some new Bridger 120s by tossing them in the dye pot and simmering the grease off after I was finished doing the rest of my traps one year. Not sure if it was the traps or the fact that they were tossed in the dye (alder bark) when new, but several years later those traps are still more silver than rust/dyed.

I should have added that if anyone does use the dishwasher, be sure to secure the chains. If you don't, they WILL damage the machine.
