I’m always seeing people holding dead skunks, skinning skunks.. standing behind then while trapped.. it blows my mind.. I’m in middle Tennessee.. caught my first skunk in the early 80’s.. probably a trailer truck load since then.. our skunks stink to high heaven.. theres no way anyone could skin one.. just going down the road and come up on a road kill and you can’t breathe for 10 minutes.. I’ve pulled up to a farm before, stepped out of my truck.. and could smell a skunk in the trap half a mile away… one day I put a 220 in a groundhog den.. stood up and a skunk ran out.. slam… dead skunk.. then here comes the spray… take off running.. come back 2 weeks later to remove the bones.. and it’s still stinking… lol

Called the wrong play a couple years ago while skinning a skunk. Got it in the face from about 10 inches away. Literally had essence tripping off me. Had more effect on wife than me. Finished skinning it before i went and got cleaned up.

The smell never bothered me at all. If they stink give them a bath in Dawn dish soap, peroxide and baking soda. The smell is gone. I have put up lots of them.

I enjoy the smell, I've been told I smile when we drive past a roadkill.

Keep a small tub of Vicks vapor rub in the vehicle, rub a little under your nose next time you catch one
It will help for those that need it

The few skunks I've caught this year have not sprayed when caught. And didn't spray when dispatched.

Doesn't seem to bother these guys.

I would have a hard time doing that when they are alive and in the trap. I can smell then a quarter mile away if I have them caught. I do not have the stomach for them what so ever.

Don't know about others but have burned out sense of smell for skunks , of course neighbors aren't top leased when I'm skinning em, as far as trapping them goes,try to stick to using no sprays if in other trap dispatching behind shoulder has resulted in not getting to stinky

The secret is to eat a Ham Samich while you skin them.

I’ve never been bothered by it but I can eat Limburger cheese so maybe the two are related.

I like the smell. Although, not when close to them and they spray and it's eye watering. I have no problem skinning them, even if they did spray. Usually give them a bath in the peroxide deal after I skin them though.

And I love gusto , really don’t mind the skunky smell but is there a trick to trapping them so they don’t release the essence?

Most of mine that I catch in bodygrips have some oder to them. I guess we just don't mind the smell too much. When we catch them in footholds or dps, it's just a matter of proper dispatch to control oder and preserve the essence.

Definitely some truth to that.

I have released quite a few out of cages without them spraying. Move slow and talk in a low voice. If they start stomping their feet back off and let them calm down. I can usually get ahold of one end of the cage and roll it over without them spraying. If people or dogs have got them wound up then all bets are off.

Maybe 3-5 out of 100 spray you just need to talk nice to them most of that 3-5 is human error (rushing) learn the pole method. Some skunks are just sheepdog crazy but only a few.

My other half says I'm nose blind to them. I think some people just don't like the smell. Doesn't bother me at all.
Smells nice to me in fact. Guess I'm like Big Sams kids. Just not as adorable

I tell folks not to worry it will wear off in a few weeks.

Sometimes when they say they smell skunk I just look around and say “yes I smell it to.”

I don't dislike the smell of skunk musk and like it in small amounts. I once wasn't quite able to finish a sandwich after being sprayed. I also ruined some ice cream with the first skunk pelt I ever took. I did a good job skinning it and then cut both sacks. The musk ended up on me and in my kitchen. I put the pelt in my freezer, with some ice cream and venison. The venison took on a somewhat skunky flavor, but I ate it anyways. I ate some of the skunky ice cream and let my dogs finish the rest.

There's a big difference between a faint smell of skunk and pure essence on you. Even if you are just nearby, you are rank. Maybe if you live alone...

Hay a buddy of mine, 10 years ago let his Jack Russel Terrier out at nite to Pee. He looked out first and saw a cat. Well you guessed it. Not a cat buy peppie la pew. the dog yipped and came running back to the door, he tried to grab it and got a hand full of the famous yellow goo. the dog then jumped in bed with his wife. She woke up real fast. The final cost of rugs bedding and etc was huge.....jk

I had a buddy do a similar think JK. We had a party at his cabin in Canada. He was the last one up and stepped in a pile of dog crap barefoot on his way to cabin. He stumbled into bed where his wife was fast asleep, well not for long. LMAO. She couldn’t wake him up so she headed for the couch. Threw away the bedding next morning. He was a mess!!

Wife had a little hairy yellow lap dog that hated skunks. Never killed one but if was in a hundred yards or so of the house it would run around it barking till it got sprayed good. Come home with its tail between its legs. was not happy with the bath after. never did quit assaulting skunks

Those little ankle biters are all that way I believe. We had one that thought it was King Kong. Got in trouble all the time.

It's an acquired taste.

We had a Jack Russell that was good at taking out skunks without getting sprayed. She'd stay nose to nose with them and circle until she could dart in and grab them. Her pups never learned it, and got sprayed often.

I had a Chesapeake that would actively kill and eat skunks. He would look up at me like Del Jue taking scalps,“what you don’t want any of these!”.

He would occasionally get them killed without them spraying as well. I could never figure out how he did it.
