Took a drive out the Steese yesterday, Sat. Pre bou opener scouting. In 5 or 6 places there was a bright orange sign that said: Registered Trapline. Next line said they trapped from MP 39 to 120, both sides of the road. Bottom of the sign gave 12 names that are trapping the area. Seemed like alot of country to claim but 81 divided by 12 is about 6.5 miles. Not too difficult for a guy to handle 6 and a half miles of line.
While letting folks know you're trapping in an area might invite other trappers it also lets all the dog mushers, hikers, ski folks, etc. know there might be traps in the area and keep the folks with dogs out.
Lastly, tho I didn't stop to check every trail coming off the steese I didn't notice much sign of snogo activity on side trails off the road. There has long been a sign at the Davidson ditch pull off saying there are guys trapping back in Nome Cr. area. This is the first time I've seen signs anywhere else.
Oh, most of us know there is no such thing as a "registered trapline" but, I'd say 90% of the non trappers don't know that.

That would be enough to keep me out of those grounds.

I’ve personally helped that family in years past set and run that trapline. It’s a big deal , takes an unbelievable amount of time/effort but they work that entire area together as a family (now with the 4th generation)and have had help from many friends and even new trappers. It’s a sad time when that caribou hunt starts as the theft starts also and complaints.
