Headed up for an elk hunt and came across an older couple by the highway, they had hit a bighorn ram.
The amount of damage to the vehicle was substantial but they were ok.

Called the GW to let her know and stopped by the WG&F research facility so someone could go get the carcass.
Nice 9 yr old ram. If G&F wants it for display the spouse may boil it out for them.

This time of the year bucks are rutting and so are the bighorn sheep- just getting going.
Watch out in high game animal areas.

Never been up close to one of those, they look to be bigger and more solid than our lightweight white tails. I know what a 90lb doe can do to a car I don't want to find out what one of those would do. And you guys with moose and elk are screwed.

I didn't take a pic of their vehicle but it was very smashed into the engine compartment.
An elk or moose would have been over the roof of that car. They hit pickups about windshield high.
The ewes were all above the highway cut looking down at him. They had just gone to the creek to drink, beside the highway.

Might not be able to buff out the dents left by them horns…solid looking animal!

I take it they were not in a Dodge Ram ? Not sure if 1500,2500 or 3500 would be better ?

Glad they are okay. How much does ones of those rams usually weigh?

~275 to 300 lbs. but built stout and solid.

They were in a Ford Escape, older one. Front end was cratered.
The head alone probably weighed 35 lbs, mine did at least weigh that.
We see elk and mule deer hit along this highway too.
Husband had a mule deer doe jump right out in front of him one time. Just a big dent in the bumper of his F250, right in the gap of the grill guard.

Luckily the herd of ewes and lambs was not in the road too, would have been nasty.
The sheep biologist just called to ask about capturing and collaring ewes on the ranch. He had not heard yet of the ram getting hit. I could hear the disappointment in his voice after I told him about it.
They plan to heli capture and collar a couple of ewe maybe next week, if we get our last cow elk down this weekend.
