OK it has taken me a while to do this, mainly because the mice etc have been cleaning out the tubes of the bait. I have had cleaned out tubes with no coon on the video for days. I have several to download so bear with me as it takes a bit. Peanut butter is on right, marshmellows on left. As you can see the first coon just goes through with no response to them. It should be noted that NO coons have come through this spot since my last videos. This one that did failed to stall out and work the tubes. Yesterday I added Coydog's super duper Cherrybomb lure to a third tube in the center. On the addition of that, numbers of coon after days of no activity in this area are working the area for food. They do not dig overly hard at the third tube, but my oh my look how they work the general area over better than any other wideo I have put up. Coydogs lure is a very intense loud cherry smell that permeates an area. I think I am learning that you can stall coons out and start thier front paws to working with a good lure, but as Rick Kaspar has told me you gotta give em something to eat too. Here is first one, will take a bit for me to put the others on.

It was like once they got close, they couldn't help but get in the water and start feeling around. Looks like that particular coon flipped it out of the tube to see if some real food was underneath it! lol

Awsome post K-9. When I video the buckets, I find that with just bait, and no fish oil, I get limited visits. Add the fish oil or even "fox gland lure" I get multiple visits a night.
Would love to give that cherry stuff a try.

thanks for posting.. to be honest given where I "would" have placed traps on those pipes, I think i would have missed about half of them given they stood further back when they stuck their hands in the pipe. I did notice that they went for the pipe on the left more than the right. So marshmellows over PB.. hm.... I've tried Marshmellows in the past with zero success on them. wonder if I was using them too late in the season?

Cool videos. Coydogs Cherry bomb huh? Everything I own smells like that crap now.
Although I will not be trapping coyotes this year, I would like to see some coyote vids.
Cameron2, if your watching this post, I will be in contact soon to get me a couple of them cameras. That looks addictive.

Thanks, that was interesting...
Seems more like direction of travel had more barring on what they hit first... However, none of the vids showed a coon walking by and all of a sudden getting alarmed (lured) by a smell/scent... looks more curiosity in my opinion...
Definitely make you think different!

I've always thought marshmallows are better as a visual tool. They have very little odor. The coon in the one video pulled it out and didn't even eat it. Interesting stuff. It would be interesting to see some other baits used.

K9... when can we get another installment of " COON 101" Sorry been busy with meth cookers. I have it on a coyote location now. However I am going to shift back to coon this weekend. This fall, when we start getting good beat down coon trails, I plan to set fake 220 mockups on the trails at varying hieghts, and see what the coons do to go through, around, or over them. Also I want to try this with varying side guides etc, some open spots and some crowded spots, to see if there is a different reaction. I also want to film some snare locations. I may even deer stop a snare so that it cannot close up, and put it in various scenarios to determine the value of chin ups, etc. Right now our coon are in the corn and no great trails, but just an idea.

I enjoyed the videos. Not being picky or anything, but these coon are well fed, summertime coon.I feel that when food sources start to dry up and the weather turns colder, they would have a different reaction to the bait.I feel they would work all of the "sets" regardless of what is in the tubes as long as it has a food smell. JMO. I agree and plan to do some testing when they start pushing fur and taking on fat. It will be very very interesting to see the difference and compare. I do not know what the best Griz lure is yet, as I want to see fall observations on coon that are more food oriented. I know from speaking with a guy who kills a lot with Griz, that fish is very good. I know from my observations of PVC in the fall, that the coon dig it harder than they did now in these tests. What I think I have learned: -Gang sets gang sets gang sets. -Some lures are better at stalling out coon, and when they stall out and get into "feeding mode" the front feet are doing the work water or dryland. Its no wonder flipped traps happen. -Lure is good but I am a beleiver that bait is mandatory. I will see what the fall responses bring, but I am thinking lure stalls them at the set, but bait gets them reaching. -A good "permeating" smell like Coydog's stalls them out and keeps them coming back looking for a food source. -As I have always presumed, peanut butter is not a good coon bait as the mice will not leave it alone and it is gone before the coon have a chance to respond to it. -I was surprised marshellows did not have a better response. Seemed the coon fiddled with them but only one wanted to eat them. Before I added the Coydog lure, one coon walked right by between the marshmellows and peanut butter, and did not stop to check them out. When the cherry smell was added, a feeding reponse totally came into play and both tubes got checked out, after days with no action at all. I am sure there is more, but those thoughts come to mind. I just went out and got my new friend the camera off a fence post where it has been this week. No animals to report other than a deer walked by. This was at a top notch fall location. However, the whole world is habitat and cover here, and the coyotes are in the corn fields. This coyote thing will get better soon with the harvest starts.

Am thinking about hammering white PVC tubes pre season. Same diameter as griz. Get them used to reaching into white tube.
If you were doing this, say 60 locations, how would you design the test?
20 locations, one tube, fish 20 locations, two tubes, one fish one marshmallow 20 locations, three tubes, one fish, one marshmallow, one (?)
Lots of details to work out.

I agree with K9 that the Griz doesn't appear to be a good choice for a summertime trap in or close to large crop plots like corn.
May be a different ball game in a city ADC problem, or other areas where the coon don't have 1000's of acres of buffet at their fingertips.
What's in the well will always come up in the bucket.
