Grandson just got off the phone. Was gathering up some brahma cross cows in a big brushy pasture. Said they were wild as deer. One of the cowboys brought a blue tick hound and a catahoula. Grandson said the blue tick would find one or two, start bawling, and the catahoula would go to him. The two dogs held them. Then the cowboys could easy find them. Said he is pretty sure they didn't miss any. Got em all roped and trailered. I never heard of a hound being used to gather cattle. So now of course grandson wants one.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Depending on the line hounds can be pretty gamey and can make good track and bay dogs. They don't all tree. Tree dogs are a recent development comparatively to their history as deer, boar, fox hounds. Tree game is a more american thing vs european.

Not terribly uncommon to use hounds to bay cattle. Ive heard of guys hunting Catahoula, Curs and Laceys and also using them on cattle.

Grew up down the road from a hog farmer who had a blue healer to help move big grumpy sows. His oldest son an I kidnapped that dog dozens of times because he would flush pheasant out of a plum thicket as good as any dog could.

To me it demonstrates how bad a working dog needs a job to be happy.

I had a Great Pyrenees she used to point quail and pheasant as good as any bird dog also fetched them as well, she pointed a covey once and caught three on the rise one in her mouth and two with her front feet. She would also fetch turtle dove's.
I miss that ole girl.

Had a black and tan show up on the farm when my daughter was small, best cattle dog I ever owned and was great around my daughter. He watched her like a hawk, and would gently drag her back if he thought she was out of bounds. I really miss that fellow. RIP Casey Jones
