What do they put in both of these that doesnt cause then to freeze?
I was hoping that they would both be mostly pure as they came from a reputable supplier.
We were single digits and I forgot to bring them in last night, thought great was going to have to wait to go check traps. For them to thaw but they weren't frozen solid.. they both reminded me of jello.
Just wondering being they're not mostly pure if there is an added smell of something that will lessen the effectiveness of them.
Thanks

Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere.
Or so I've been told.

Glycerin, a must have for me in lures and baits
I believe most lure makers put it in their products

Its not a must have in most circumstances. Its cheap and widely available and gives a consistency that humans like

I trap the second half of the season, so it's a must for me or my lures and pee are frozen and unusable.

Ive sent lures to the coldest regions of the lower 48 and specifically told very knowledgeable trappers to report back on the usability of the product in cold weather. All was good despite being told glycerin was a necessity. There are other ingredients that have a more positive effect on formulations that keep them working in cold conditions. No experience in the cold of the far North but so far I've found glycerin not to be a must in most cases in the coldest parts of the lower 48.

Would you mind telling what keeps your lures from freezing
You can send me a PM if you don't want it posted for everyone to see

I understand what Seth is saying, if you are using a lot of stuff tinctured in alcohol in your lures, or certain oils, they will also work as an antifreeze. But it depends entirely on your lure composition whether it is going to need antifreeze added. My gland lures are pretty much pure glands and urine, so I add glycerin for antifreeze and have been very happy with it. Glycerin has some very helpful properties, it is not only an antifreeze, but it helps keep products moist and not dry out or evaporate, it works as a thinning agent on lures that are too solid and a thickening agent on lures that are too runny, and it is somewhat sticky and will stick to what you smear it on. It is not an attractant though, and not only doesn't add any attraction to the lure, but dilutes the attractants.

Bearcat nailed the real benefit of glycerin, in my opinion.

To keep things from drying out so fast.

There are other things you can use to this effect too, but most of them change a formula quite a bit. Maybe for the better, maybe not.
