I have been picking up a lot of beaver ground lately and noticed I am lacking in traps. I just have 5 Bridger No. 5s and 1 MB 750 as far as footholds go, which are my preferred method for taking beaver. I am looking at getting another dozen foothold traps. What are your guys recommendations?

Lots of great equipment out there buy what you can set and are comfortable with....try to get a system started where you have a bunch of the same traps.
Be sure to add extra swivels when necessary.

I have both foothold brands. I do have more Bridger #5's coils because of the price difference.

MChewk makes a lot of sense with his suggestion. If I was buying beaver traps again I think I would standardize on one coil spring trap and a one handed setter for it. You’re not always going to have a good place to stand to reset and trying to stand on the levers or push them down by hand in soft bank ground can test a New Year’s resolution to quit cussing.

I use #4 DLS and the old #4 Jumps for my foothold beaver trapping. I can still crack a DLS over my leg and I have a Lines setter for the jumps. I’m 66 and while I have an occasional ache or pain I’m pretty fit. There will come a day when breaking a big DLS over my leg will no longer be an option. Again, if I was replacing my footholds, it would be a coil spring and a one handed setter.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

I've tried them all & caught beaver in them all and have decided the MB750 is my go-to for the way I like to set up using trap trays.

I trap a lot of shallow, hard bottom moving water so I target fronts 90% of the time.

#4 Duke works well, doesn’t break the bank, and is still big enough to get a back foot in when you miss a front.

What your budget? I've had extremely good luck using the No BS Beaver Extremes lately. (112 total and counting). I bought a doz 2 years ago. They worked so well that I had to buy another doz last year. They are a little pricier than some of the others mentioned. However as with anything in life, you get what you pay for. They are a very durable well made trap. If you do your part, I promise you they will do their part.

I also sold my menagerie of beaver traps collected over the years and standardized to the TS-85. That is such a simple, quality trap that I just love. And sometimes that huge jaw opening is just the ticket.

Make sure you know the allowable inside jaw spread for water traps in your state. Some are 7-1/2" others are 8-1/2".

Thank you all for the advice! After a lot of consideration (and selling some fur) I’ve decided to go with the TS 85s. Big jaw spreads and dogless, just seemed like the right choice for me.

I'm a double longspring guy for water traps. My preferred trap is a Victor or Blake & Lamb #4, like Boone I mainly target front feet, but they are big enough for hind feet if the situation dictates it. The longsprings bed easy and solid, and when you are setting while standing in knee deep water they are easy to break over your knee without setters. That is the reason I like Victors or B&Ls (there are other brands that are basically copies of them that would work as well) Newhouses are great traps, but due to their design their springs don't break over and they are much harder to set over your knee. And yes, most of my beaver traps are older than I am, they still catch beaver just fine though.
