I made up some skunk essence with lanolin. 15 ounces of melted lanolin and one ounce of skunk. I like how it came out except that it gets pretty hard in cold weather. Will the addition of some glycerin help to keep it a little softer during cold weather?

I haven’t. I picked up some lanolin a while back and mixed it with an ounce of skunk essence but it gets pretty hard in the cold. Still gives off plenty of odor but a little hard to dig out. Thought maybe the addition of some glycerin might keep it a little softer.

I’m finding that out, although several times I’ve seen it recommended over Vaseline. The deed is done and I cannot undo the lanolin and skunk essence. What I need now is a way to soften it so it’s easier to use in cold weather. Hence the question about adding some glycerin. I didn’t want to proceed if there was a better option or if the addition of glycerin was going to make it worse.

I'd take about 1/4 of that lanolin mix and try it. That way you still have plenty if it doesn't pan out. Ive never mixed the two

Transfer some into a smaller jar and keep it in your pants pocket to keep it warm. May work for a small amount kept at body temperature. That’ll make me popular everywhere I go. Especially at home. Even in a glass container the unmistakable skunk aura is present. Not in an overpowering way but enough to know there’s one in the vicinity.

I would just keep some in a pocket so it stays warm till you apply it. Assuming it works good as is.

A little skunk smell wafting from you is a good thing. Keeps the non trapping riff raff away when your at a gas station or convenience store. How do you trap anything without getting a little odoriferous? Its why you have a shower in the bathroom. Leave the coat with the inside pocket on the back porch or something. If your camping and trapping who is going to be around you anyway? Take a trip to town after a couple weeks and rent a motel room, the office 99% of the time will reek of curry. The desk clerk wont smell you over that stink.

Marty, here's a few options for you to consider. Take your lure outside and heat it up slowly. Add 25% of a thicker type of sun rendered oil like BTO. etc. Possibly add bacon grease or sardines packed in oil, ran through a blender. Whatever it takes to lower the freezing point of the lanoline and add attraction! Let the mixture cool off. Make adjustments if needed?
The other artificial options are, Petro, Unscented Vaseline, Glycerin.
Lol, no way am I going to carry a long call lure in my pocket either. If you don't want to carry it in your pocket, this is your next option. I've not mixed glycerin with lanolin, it very well may work. I have mixed lanolin and BTO, mixed at the right ratio (ratios vary, depending on the other ingredients you add) it will be a vary similar consistency to peanut butter and about as sticky. This is my base for my marten lure and it stays at that consistency from -20 to 60 and liquefies about 80. You'll have to play with ratios though, because I have some other ingredients other than skunk that affect the ratios. I don't know how cold I've used it, but I know at least -20 and probably colder, and it never got hard like lanolin does.
