Footholds, in the water sets will catch a mink or rat that happens by
On land, they will catch a fox that happens to check out the set
There's a place for DPs, but not on my line, I like a trap that can catch multiple species

They both have their place. But if I could only choose one I would go with a foothold. DPs are handy to stick em in and pick off a lot of coon quick... but...... I've also seem multiple occasions of coon walking by DPs without breaking stride. IMO footholds are more versatile. You can use the same trap in a variety of different sets for coon (dry land sets, pockets, fish stakes, blind trails, etc.) AND you can use them for a variety of species besides coon.... mink, rats, fox, skunk, etc.

The devil's greatest trick isn't making us think he doesn't exist. It's flattering us. So we don't see..... the devil is us.

Foot traps by far. I stink at using dps. They usually just sit empty or catch mice.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Foot holds by far. I use dog proofs around the house and barn with a mix of cheery cool aid and marshmallows to avoid catching the cats.

I can use the foothold for everything. Also dp only work when they want to check out the smell. Foothold can work in blind trail sets and catch the ones walking right by the dp.

Or a possum!

Like all others, footholds are a better choice, IMO. Unless barn/yard/house cats are an issue, that's when I use DP's.

I only set DPs for coons these days. I don't want or need to play around in the mud to catch as many coons as I want to deal with. Footholds and pocket sets will likely catch more coons if the same number of coons visited the set, but not by a lot. I'd never consider setting footholds for coon on dry land unless it was maybe a dry trail with a pounded down depression for the trap lightly covered with grass, but that will catch a lot of junk too.

I use both and each is a tool for the right place and time. I also run cages, and 220s and 160s too. Right tool for the right job.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
